Genicular Artery Embolization for Knee Pain
I had a TKR three year ago and still have new pain.
I was offered a GAE ( Genicular Artery Embolization)
Does anyone know anything about this

I really want to have my right knee done now. My procedure was done by Dr. Padia at UCLA. He did a YouTube 6 years ago. He told me the 89 year old in his video is still walking 3 miles a day. I hope all works out for you.

2 ReactionsYes, the 89 year old that was jumping up and down, haha! That's the video I watched. I don't think anyone does that close to me but I'm thinking it might be worth a drive

1 ReactionAt my appointment I mentioned the video and the man in it, just as an aside. When he told me he’s walking 3 miles a day all the these years later, I wasn’t expecting that. I have a follow up with Dr. Padia next week - will tell him the bruising is 90% healed just four weeks later. So far, so good.
That is such encouraging news, if I can avoid TKR with this procedure, I will do it. Don't know if you have heard of Iovera treatment, and it does sound similar to this, but I got that almost a year ago and it was a total failure, so trying something similar, at least for me, is a little frightening. But I am so happy it has worked for you. I can't even walk 3 minutes straight, much less 3 miles, so I know that man is a very happy man. And at his age! I am so happy for you, good luck on your follow up, but I think you know how that will be, complete success! If I had a guarantee I would do it tomorrow but I'm sure there is no guarantee.

1 ReactionHi - no, haven’t heard of the procedure you mentioned. I wouldn’t have known about GAE without my physical therapist mentioning this study. The Interventional Radiologist doing the procedure told me everyone responds differently; some can take months. I feel fortunate and hoping this lasts. I know directly and indirectly people who feel the TKR wasn’t worth it based on the outcome. Best of luck to you.

1 ReactionI had one almost 2 weeks ago and seems like my knee got better. How and where was your bruise? Mine is behind my thigh and really big. It's going away a little with some arnica gel. That area is still a bit uncomfortable, pressure, when I walk sometimes.
I had it done at U of C after I read this article.
"Through this study, UChicago Medicine became the first hospital in the Midwest — and among the first in the country — to offer GAE. In the past two years, UChicago Medicine doctors have performed more than 100 of these procedures with overwhelmingly positive outcomes, said interventional radiologist Osman Ahmed, MD, who led the clinical program."

1 ReactionThree months out, and my knee feels great. I listened to a podcast with Dr. Ahmed and the IR who did my GAE.

1 ReactionI had some bruising and discoloration on my knee, but three months out, almost to the day, almost entirely cleared up. Also, no swelling now. I didn’t have much, swelling, though. I used an ice pack for the swelling.
I had no bruising on my knee or discoloration, not much swelling either.
