Has anyone gotten relief from esophageal cancer cough? Help.

Posted by headatlanta123 @headatlanta123, Aug 26, 2023

My 77 year old husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last March. Since then he has gone through a regimen of 5 day per week radiation and one day per week chemo for 6 weeks, he finished up in May. Since that time he has experienced gut wrenching coughing spells that sometimes last for hours. Has anyone experienced this and is there treatment?

UPDATE: Dr prescribed steroids and albuterol inhaler. He is also on prescribed cough syrup. So, his cough has improved, he slept the last 2 nights.
He will complete the steroid regimen in 2 days. I pray he will have continued relief I’ll let you know.

Hi, husband is in almost same situation.. July was our 1yr anniversary of this surgery. The coughing is definitely better, but that’s not saying much.he used to spend 3 hrs standing at the sink with gut wrenching coughing.. To my INcredible frustration, his surgeon didn’t seem very concerned. We tried everything including monitoring what and when he ate.
Sometimes Tylenol cough syrup helped -soothe the throat muscle - sometimes nothing helped.. it’s very hard to watch this with no answers. 16 months post surgery and now in immunotherapy.coughing is much better, still happens but the intensity is much better. Have never gotten any real explanation or resolve from his medical team.. a lot of this recovery is maddening and unexplained. He often says “ if they would have told me all the recovery/side effects I wouldn’t have done this “. It’s just hard but I think we all get through it..

This forum has helped me feel that I'm not alone in this daily post-op struggle. 4 months since my esophagus was removed and PET Scan revealed metastasis in 3 new areas. Am currently getting immunotherapy and the chemo oncologist says remission is the goal.
I've lost 50lbs. and at 73 I worry for my wife
