has anyone experienced a full thickness hamstring tear and what to do

Posted by suerc @suerc, Jul 10, 2023

I am 65. I have a full thickness hamstring tear and the Dr's don't want to do anything about it as they say the surgery to fix it at my age is to mush. He said all I could do is try injections to help. but he didn't tell me what injections. any Ideas please ?

So sorry to hear about your issues, I am going for an mri in two weeks to check for tears and look at my ischial bursitis. (Was supposed to be yesterday, but some RX snafoo)
Really is miserable, so I feel for you.
How did they diagnose and are they giving you anything for the pain? Did they recommend light PT or just rest/time to heal?
Hope they can come up with something to help and if they do, please share!

You need to go to a pain clinic to see if injections would help you

I found out from a MRI. The Dr was actually looking for SI Joint Problems. I do have so SI problems but they can be managed with SI joint Injections. The Dr I saw said I need a new hip but also the hamstring tear. They said that they could just try different injections to find one that works for the hamstring. Be ause of my age it's to much on me to fix it. So I have had a SI Joint and a Caudal because sitting is so painful. It really helped. Didn't last to long. Any other ideas ?

@suerc. It's puzzling to me that a provider would say that "at your age" is too much. I haven't heard that personally as an excuse for treatment but my father did when he was in his 80's (for a different condition). I'd like to offer my support in suggesting you get another opinion. I was 67-years-old when I had a total hip replacement (I'm 71 years old now). In between the time of the initial consultation and the hip surgery I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had a hysterectomy. I consulted with my orthopedic surgeon at the time and he said to re-schedule the hip surgery for a few months later.

I haven't torn a large muscle like a hamstring but I did tear my rotator cuff in 2008. I had a surgical repair and with PT and healing time that shoulder is in very good shape.

So, back to what to do? You have an MRI and can send that to another orthopedic department. Would you like to request an appointment at Mayo Clinic? If so, here is the link:

@suerc What was the specialty of the doctor who told you they wouldn’t treat the hamstring tear because of age? An orthopedic surgeon? This seems like an orthopedic problem to me as they don’t just focus on our bones. They also work on the attachments which include muscles and tendons. Where else can you go for care?

I am so sorry that you have lost your doctor support system…so many have moved to our area recently that getting a doc appointment takes forever. I’m sure same for you, or they just left your area. Have you made new patient appointments with others?

Please share any ideas; just recently had an orthopedist diagnose ischial bursitis after several year of miserable sitting.

Previously had numerous steroid injections, caudal injections through pain management and nothing worked.
Had my pelvic pt write down all of the names of the places in my backside and hamstrings that hurt, and took that to the orthopedic doc on a knee follow up, and asked him what kind of doc to see…had no idea that he would be the one!
I had never discussed this issue with him…
Injections did not help for bursitis, so hopefully mri will show issues that can be resolved.
I also had Levator ani syndrome, with some symptoms still, horrible butt pain, not to be rude, but feels like a large object in butt.
( online description says golfball…)Sitting, standing, laying down. Nothing there but pain. Nothing to be done, except some strong meds which I choose to no longer take. And trying pt. Unsure of cause, but was in an accident 2 years before stuff really started to amp up.
I don’t know if all these things are related in any way…I was a very active 70 year old and no longer take daily hikes, sit for any period of time, golf or car rides of any distance.

Does anyone have/had Levator ani syndrome and what treatment helped? What kind of doctor?

Thank you …
