5-Aminolevulinic Acid and Pulsed Dye Laser for Oral Leukoplakia
Hello all. I have a question. After having a Novocain injection to fill a bottom middle tooth, I developed a raw patch on the floor of my mouth right where the needle went. After several different medications--anti-fungal, antibiotic, steroid--nothing helped.
A biopsy was done a few months ago, and "mild Dysplasia" was found. Dysplasia can turn into cancer in a high majority of cases. To clarify, I went through head/neck radiation approximately five years ago for a cancerous throat tumor.
The lesion has been in my mouth for over two years. My doctor hasn't suggested any type of treatment, so I began researching on JAMA. What I found, sounds like a miracle. In almost 90% of cases, this type of treatment totally cures the dysplasia with no side effects. The frustrating part is that none of the doctor's offices I have called have this type of laser.
Here is a link to the article if anyone is interested to learn of this:

Here is what it is called "Using 5-Aminolevulinic Acid and Pulsed Dye Laser for Photodynamic Treatment of Oral Leukoplakia."
The following is an article explaining the two main types of these raw patches:

If a moderator, or anyone could tell me where this procedure is performed, I would be grateful. I live in Northeast Indiana, right by the Indiana/Ohio State Line.
Thank-you.

Once again I had to dust off the Gray's Anatomy only to not find Aminolevulinic Acid referenced. Found it elsewhere. Have you checked with Mayo Rochester? Perhaps the Oral and Maxillofacial Division? They likely could help you out with this. It may be an eight or so hour drive for you but likely worth it. Good luck.
Hello @hrhwilliam,
Thank-you, very much for checking. If you skim the JAMA article concerning this laser treatment, you will discover it has an extremely high success rate. It is surprising that none of the Dr's offices I have called (about seven different offices) have heard of it. Also, several people have written to this site concerning dysplasia, and this could help tremendously.
Thanks again, and I will do as you have kindly directed.
Best wishes.
