Has anyone else on Reclast developed hyperparathyroidism?

Hi all. I'm an athletic almost 67-year-old runner and weight trainer eating a plant based diet. I went on Reclast 2.5 years ago and about a year after my first annual Reclast infusion developed hyperparathyroidism. My endocrinologist had me on 50,000 Vitamin D for the past 2 years but levels keep going up (they went down briefly but are now at 132 PTH). My endo did not say what caused elevated PTH but I've seen a few references in online PubMed studies to Hyperparathyroidism secondary to bisphosphenates. Does anyone know about this? Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

You might find the Norman Parathyroid Center informative. Here's a link to some info: https://www.parathyroid.com/parathyroid-disease.htm

Thanks -- I did visit that link but didn't find anything about bisphosphonates causing hyperparathyroidism.

What a mystery. I have had 5 Reclast infusions and I am hypothyroid. My blood work comes back with good numbers thus never needing to change my Synthroid dosage. I was hypo before the infusions. According to my endocrinologist, the infusions should have no effect on the thyroid. Good luck in solving the mystery!

I like your name! Thanks for the update. I did have my parathyroid scanned 3 times over the past 10 years. My endo felt it during examination. Never had to have it removed…phew. But, my point is that I was hypothyroid before taking Reclast infusions. He warned me years ago that I would develop osteoporosis because of the Synthroid and under active thyroid. I take 13,000 IU D3 twice a week as my D level was low when we thought I had to have my parathyroid removed. The infusions never interfered with my thyroid levels. Is there another endo you can see to get a second opinion?

Just adding to the conversation; I am hyper also but was diagnosed prior to taking Reclast. My endocrinologist scans me every year and I am holding steady, even after the infusion.

Hi there! Your first sentence describes me to a T except that I am not taking Reclast, but taking Tymlos in order to build some bone. I found an article on Reclast and hyperparathyroidism, but am unable to post the link. It is from the eHealthMe website. The article title is "Could Reclast cause Hypreparathyroidism?" Hope you can find it.
Another thought...what is your blood calcium level? It should never be above 10 and if so you may need to have your parathyroid glands checked out by a specialist. You have 4 of them and a specialist will be able to properly assess if there are tumors (benign) present. If you have tumors on them they can be removed easily. But, the surgeon will have to check all 4 to be sure. The Norman Parathyroid Center in Tampa is a leader in all things parathyroid. Since there are other symptoms that go along with hyperparathyroidism it may be worth your while to have a consult with them, even by phone. Good luck!

How often are you taking 50,000 vitamin D? What is your 25(OH)D blood level?
