Has anyone been on Linezolid for MAC?

Posted by Mary @mjb24, Mar 4 7:11pm

I have been on Azithromycin, Ethambutol & Rifampin for 8 months and Arikayce for 7 months. So far I still test positive for MAC so my id doctor referred me to another doctor who is able to get other medications. I saw him today and he wants me to start Linezolid. Has anyone had experience with this antibiotic and if so, was it effective for you?

My experience with Linezolid is irreversible neuropathy!! Don't take the chance. I was on it for over 100 days and even complaining to my ID doc that something was going on with my feet. It's partly my fault for not doing my own research sooner, but the doc should have been aware of the devastating side effects of this drug. I made the call to stop taking it but too late. I'm considering seeing a medical malpractice lawyer since I'll be a cripple for the rest of my life. I am numb from my knees down. Any experience with medical malpractice lawyers out there? Google "Linezolid and neuropathy."

@mpowers501 I am so sorry to hear about your experience! My doctor's office called today and apparently he has me starting Nuzyra and not Linezolid. That's another one I don't recall reading about on this sight. I miss my old id doctor, I always left his office with a clear understanding of where we were going. This one talked about so many things, I left feeling totally confused.

After I was on the Big 3 for 16 months and still positive, I did 2 different IV drugs for 4 months - Amikacin twice daily, and Imipenem 3 time daily. Finally had a negative sputum test. I had a lung resection to remove a large cavity in Aug of last year. All of the biopsies came back negative. My doctor then told me he wanted me on Linezolid for 12 months, along with another IV drug. I said no to the IV drug - not only did I not want to do it, my co-pay would have been $638 for 7 days. I started the Linezolid in Oct of 2024, once a day. After 3 weeks he told me to do twice a day. When I did that, after my morning dose I would want to go to sleep, it made me so tired. So I only take it once a day now before I go to bed. I do get a little numbness in my fingers sometimes, but not my feet. Other than that I really have no symptoms from it.

When I was first diagnosed with MAC and Abcessus I was imipenem , Amikacin and oral Linezolid. Had to stop Linezolid, liver enzymes and low platelets. After IV antibiotics was In Omadacycline ( Nuzyra) until insurance changed. No longer have Abcessus just MAC like every other sputum test

I started lenazolid in January 3 days a week. So far so good but you have to watch for certain foods. This another subject but does anyone have dry mouth

"Linezolid, an antibiotic used to treat drug-resistant bacteria, can cause peripheral neuropathy and optic neuropathy. These adverse effects can occur after taking linezolid for longer than the recommended 28 days. "

If you're on it question your doctor on his/her knowledge of possible side effects.. My doctor was oblivious to the more serious side effects and I'm paying the price. I was kept on Linezolid for over 100 days. I was even complaining to her about something going on with my feet. I did my own research too late, and I'm the one who stopped the med, not the doc. I am numb from the knees down...my life activities have been altered for the rest of my life. I'm considering a medical malpractice case.

@mjb24 , My sensitivity shows resistant to linezolid so it won't help me. Good luck to you.

I was put on Linezolid when I was first diagnosed , 3 years ago.I had to stop by day 7 because it dropped my platelets dangerously low.
