Pretty good advice Danny. Laugh with em or back at em!

Yes, and tell them your gas is premium.😂

What to do, though, if rather than laughter, they're disgusted? Because I have had people literally tell me that "everybody does NOT do it, you can keep from doing it if you'll just eat right and control yourself and stop being so disgusting!" (In my case, eating "right" to control it would mean never eating or swallowing again. So I'm not that desperate. Yet.)

Carry some nose plugs and give them to drs who have a bad reaction. Or bring a travel size spray, a nice sachet or plug in to remember you by.
1) It shows your aware of the problem
2) You care
3) You have a SCENT OF HUMOR
4) You still want their advice

yes everybody does it. unless they are a freak of nature. so even animals do it. they don't want to admit that they do. and they are just being mean to you. they are being disgusting by lying. ignore them. because you'll never change their minds. they're right. your wrong mentality. OK?

I guess one of my many problems is I only seem to meet up with mean people then (including some of the unhelpful smarta$$e$ in this forum). Oh, well, most people in my age group don't have social lives either. (Too bad I'm allergic to alcohol; they say it helps with loneliness.)

Thanks, Danny. I'm a boomer also. I mentioned alcohol since I'd love to find something to relax and not be so lonely, but neither marijuana or meditation or yoga work either; frustrating. (The best mood booster would be to socialize with others but that can't happen due to my digestive issues keeping me housebound so thank goodness for the internet; better than nothing.)

Do you have an anti anxiety medication? Alcohol is probably not a good idea if you are. Gastric issues aren't the only things that are mocked, believe me. But combining mental health challenges to the mix certainly complicates things. Usually one exacerbates the other, becoming a vicious circle. I've had a number of abdominal surgeries, and any time I feel certain kinds of pain, anxiety kicks in. Another surgery or hospital stay!!??

Internal worries surely don't need added external pain from other people who haven't been where you are. Boundaries have to be set and maintained for our own sake, which sometimes means being selective about whom we allow to share our space. There are always people who are toxic, but thankfully, there are lots who are great to be around.

No, no matter how I tell the doctors how anxious I am, they always prescribe anti-depressants which make my already high-anxiety even higher. I've heard it's getting harder and harder to get doctors to prescribe anti-anxiety meds. There is a muscle relaxer that helps *sometimes* with my digestive problems but I have to be really sparing with it since it's on that restricted list (or whatever it's called).

I understand. I tapered off Klonopin last fall, only because of my decade long search for a pain medication. I've tried dozens of things that others swear by, including all 5 of my siblings, for neuropathy pain. Since the only medication that has helped for longer than a few weeks is MS Contin, it's almost time to go back to it. I stopped taking it to try 3 other medications - buprenorphine, Topamax and low dose Naltrexone. I'm giving the 3rd one 3 months before I give up and go back to opioids.

So, I'm not taking any anxiety medication now, and I feel the loss. But if I weren't looking at an opioid, I think it wouldn't be a problem with my doctors to restart Klonopin or some other medication. If you have seen a psychiatrist, I can't imagine that they would refuse to prescribe something for you.

Take care.

Jim
