Hair loss after TKR

Posted by cyndi2013 @cyndi2013, 1 day ago

I am 2 years post op TKR. I had natural curly hair before I had my TKR. My hair came out really fast. I kept getting trims. My new hair has grown back, but not a bit of curls, this is board straight hair. This is kinda frustrating since I had natural curly all my life. Any suggestions 🤔?

I lost all my hair at 21. My suggestion is to be grateful for all the years you you had it.
However, your curly hair will probably return, but it will take a while, maybe six months or longer.
Take care,
Jake.

@jakedduck1 Thanks. I just thought it was odd to lose my hair after a TKR.

@cyndi2013 I was going crazy the first three months post TKR with the hair loss and the long strands covering my clothing and filling the shower drain. Guess it was a way to get me to bend to clear the drain. I now have the little hair sprouts returning and the shedding has stopped. It was as bad as post pregnancy. You are the first person who has talked about this undisclosed side effect. My hair has always been straight so I assume that is what is growing back. Thank you for your post and sending wishes your curly hair returns.

@momma2lucy. I have never met anyone that experienced this hair loss after TKR. I never lost a strand with my first TKR. Unreal.
I struggle with this straight hair. I had curly hair all my life.

I’ve never heard of hair loss after surgery, but I do recall my hair stopped growing for awhile after minor knee surgery.
I figured it was from the stress(both emotional and physical)of the procedure and energy needed for recovery.
I would think stress is a factor for you too.

I lose hair every time I have surgery or a viral illness (COVID). It does grow back, but, it takes months.

I lost a lot of hair from my total knee replacement in March. The hair loss usually starts about 3 months after surgery. Stress does play a major factor in this in what surgery does to your body.

Blessings & Prayers....

I also experienced hair loss after each joint replacement surgery. Now after 3 joint replacement surgeries hair loss was never discussed. But this is the first place I have seen it . I read an article somewhere about how surgery is a physical trauma and stress puts severe physical and emotional stress on our body, triggering a sharp spike in cortisol and other stress hormones. And that high cortisol pushes a large number of active hair follicles prematurely into a resting phase. None of my hair has grown back , not my eyebrows . My hair is still falling out at 77 yo & almost bald in the front. I have learned techniques to cover the thinning areas and wear my hair up most of the time.

@hippylife I am so sorry. Have you had all of your thyroid panels checked?

Prayers for you....
