Going to Mayo Jacksonville for Gastroparesis...what to expect

I have hit every brick wall for years and finally am going to Mayo in FL in three weeks.
Just wondering how to make the most of the appointment and what to expect once there. Has anyone else been there for this and of so, what did they do.
So much anxiety over not knowing what to expect once I go there.
I know every case is different. I just have no idea what they do there and how it will be. Will they send me out to other specialist who are not on my list now? Do they schedule tests and procedures after you meet with the gastro specialist?
Not even sure how long to get my hotel room for.
Would like to hear others stories.

I got the three staples out yesterday. One of the staples was biting me. A towel might have caught on it when I was patting it dry and almost dropped the cloth.. not sure. Doc said the incision site looks good.. just a little irritated from one of the staples. A little antibiotic ointment .. the kind with pain relief in it even better.. for a few days. I am still restricted on driving, riding long distance, lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk and not a lot of bending.. be careful how I move.. no twisting. He said the bone should have a good start on being fused. I don't have the greatest bones.. so may take longer to completely fuse. .. around 6 months. I go for a checkup in a month.

I am getting in and out of chairs better. I am walking better. I hurt if I try to walk too fast. The sight is not throbbing and having all sorts of different pains as it did. No groin pain. The surgery area is mostly just sore. I put it at a 2 before staples taken out.. a few minutes later I would have put it at 3 or maybe 4. It was like stinging bees for a few minutes.

I am still doing a moist heating pad a couple of times a day. I can tell I am still a little swollen. The visible bruising is gone from the surgery. I bruise easily.

I was fully awake and had no grogginess afterward. I will have to ask if they did stick something in the IV or if they just injected something in the surgery site. I did feel pain at the grafting part and I let them know and it was taken care of immediately. It was really strange hearing a hammer beat the bone graft in place. I am sure it sounded louder to me than anyone else in the room. I was at the surgery center less than two hours. It would have been less time, but the arm to the fluoroscope broke during the surgery and they had to bring in another machine. I had to wait for the antibiotic bag to finish too. This was done at a pain clinic… the doctor is an anesthesiologist. Elsewhere they may do the surgery differently.

I had to do something to quell the SI joint pain. I know a risk that something else may start hurting.. the other SI joint or even higher up in my back.

I hope your wife finds relief for her pain.

Thanks so much for sharing your story! It made a huge difference and I want to wish you luck on your upcoming visit. I live 3 hours from Jacksonville and I love it there. But I am a first timer at mayo.
I have looked at my portal daily and I filled out everything. I sent all my test and images and doc notes quite some time ago. My portal is still empty. I am all set to tell them everything and let them take over. I feel I will get a wonderful response and finally some answers.

I really would love to know at what point before you go do they give you any schedule? I do have my consult, then my allergy appt then the gastro dept appt. But that is it.
Maybe they are waiting to speak with me and then decide what to schedule?
Not sure if most people know ahead about any test or if it is all done once you consult and they meet you?
That is the part that makes me nervous.

You travel there a lot. I hope it is not too far for you. Also, how is it getting them to work with insurance and get things paid for. I bet they are great at all of that. Nothing worse than needing a test or procedure that is out of pocket and over priced!

I have been in Jacksonville with GI problems and other stuff done still no answers when do doctors start telling you something having last test tomorrow been here 3 weeks still no answers or anyone talking do they wait till last test

Good morning

I was diagnosed with Gastroperisis and the local doctors are of no help. Looking for solutions to receive unrelenting symptoms. Help!! Is there a Dr at Mayo that has knowledge and willing to tteat

Hi @mschiffman and welcome to Connect. Mayo has plenty of doctors that specialize in Gastroparesis. Your best bet is to call their Central Appointment Office (http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63) and find out if they are in network with your insurance and are accepting new patients.
