Going for Prostate Biopsy Tomorrow ….Looking for Opinions and Thoughts
Hello,
I am going for a prostate biopsy tomorrow which I am dreading.
Here is a little background on me. I am 64yr in good physical condition. My PSA has always been high. When I first got it tested 9 years ago it was 5.65 in the years following it was 5.4 - 5.1 - 5.79.
All DRE were fine. Have had BPH for years. Had an MRI done and showed my prostate was a giant size of 171cc. Showed several benign nodules and one PIRADS 3 lesion 1.2 cm. Really don’t have any issues other than getting up 3x a night.
From what I have read with my results the my PSA density would be low which is a good thing. Just trying to find something positive before tomorrow lol. I have read for months about the prostate and it is very complicated. Anyone had a similar experience like me.
What are the odds that the lesion and PSA is all from BPH ?
I live in Indianapolis by the way.
Thanks

@jc76 that is super helpful. Thanks so much. The only reason I was troubled by the G6’s is because they were randomly collected, not so much the number. The G7 was seen in the MRI, so it was expected, but not terrible. I’m meeting with the Dr on Wednesday and making notes based on this feedback. Thanks again.

2 Reactions@indyguy we are definitely in similar places and I’m dealing with similar feelings — pissed off about the possible lifelong nature of this, but also realizing it’s relatively common as we men age, and obviously could be much worse.
You’re right about biopsies typically finding something. I guess it’s because they wouldn’t do them if there wasn’t already a fairly strong suspicion. In that respect, I felt mentally prepared for the call and know that you will too. I honestly would have been surprised if they said there was nothing. I probably wouldn’t have trusted it! Lol.
I have an appointment on Wednesday and I know they will push surgery, but I’m not ready to move forward without a better understanding of my situation and options. All of the info here is so helpful for asking the right questions, advocating for yourself, and understanding the alternatives. I remembered that there is a cancer helpline through my employer. I believe they guide people through this sort of research. I’m definitely going to look into that too. I also ordered the Walsh book several have recommended here.
It helps that PC is generally slow growing. Time is usually on our side to do our homework and make a thoughtful decision.
I hope all goes smoothly for you on the 11th, and the phone call after. There’s some relief in at least having some answers now and not wondering. The mental side of the biopsy was worse than the physical for me, but I’m glad that my pee finally looks normal again! lol

1 Reaction@stldadof4 As others have said, you still need a little more information before choosing a treatment. I chose Tulsa Pro at Mayo for my single lesion 4+3 in July of 2024. No sign of cancer at this point. I have a friend who recently had pretty much the same biopsies you did, with two spots of 6 and one 7. He also has decided on Tulsa after meeting with multiple doctors and an oncologist. We were both 65 when treated. One thing Tulsa does not have is long term data on success, but early results show similar recurrence rates as surgery and radiation at 3 years.

1 Reaction@jcf58 I am definitely going to look into this option too. I remember reading your other post about it. Was it covered by insurance or did you have to pay out or pocket? I know all plans are different. I’m 57 and still working.
Medicare paid for it. I have heard some insurance companies are now paying for it as official Medicare codes came out in 2025 which has helped drive inclusion.

1 Reaction@jcf58 that’s awesome. I’m not Medicare eligible yet. Hopefully my private insurance would cover at least part of something like this.

1 Reaction@indyguy My Gleason score was 7. They said my cancer was aggressive.
I waited. When they finally took my prostate out, it had already spread outside the prostate.
You probably don't want to do that.

I definitely agree with everything you said. I’m not looking forward to the pee lol.
Let us know how your appointment goes Wednesday.
Did you have a transrectal biopsy in the office ? That’s what I’m doing so I will be awake.
Sending positive thoughts to you.
@lacraig1
Yes I know there is a fine line between waiting and watching and just getting it done. How long did you wait to have surgery ?

2 years
that was his call
2 years between biopsies.
My wife said I should have had it removed a long time ago
so you don't have a cancer diagnosis or Gleason score?
