Gluteal tendinopathy - endless pain - losing my mind

Posted by emarks @emarks, Nov 29, 2025

Has anyone else dealt with this:
I'm now up to 5 months of daily pain, the the last two weeks have been the worst. I'm totally losing my mind.
First diagnosis was L5/S1, with disc pressing on nerve. I had cortisone shots, then an epidural. Not much relief, although with time the L5/S1 pain seems to have subsided. I've been doing physical therapy for almost the entire time.
For the past two months, increasing pain in left buttock and often sharp pain in left hip area. Diagnosed with piriformis syndrome, new MRI shows gluteal tendinopathy. I got two cortisone shots for that 6 days ago.
The hip area pain just keeps getting worse. I've had to cancel many plans and limit my activities. It's very depressing and is driving me crazy. Just wondering if anyone else is dealing with this and if they have any suggestions for both physical and mental health. Thank you.

Finally found someone going through the same thing as me! The pain from my trochanter to my iliac crest is almost unbearable. I have a hard time walking any distance or sitting very long. I also wake up every couple hours and it takes me forever to fall asleep. I have EDS so cortisone shots are really bad for my tissues but I tried it a couple times and no relief. I do have moderate damage to my L4 L5 areas and the surgeon seems to think it is coming from there. I meet with the surgeon again on Tuesday... Today is Thursday. In the mean time the pain is becoming unbearable. I don't have any ideas but I feel the same as you do if that helps any. I hope you get feeling better.

Be sure to check issues within your hips. A family member was scheduled for back surgery some years ago when a young physician working in pain medicine suspected a hip replacement was the underlying culprit which had been missed by several specialists. After this experience I would check just how functional your hip movements appear ruling it out or in. Pain can express itself divergently. We who are reading your text wish you the best of all pain free outcomes.

Sorry to hear your story. My neuropathy and other nerve pains make me wish that I don't wake up in the morning sometimes. So, I understand. Sounds like you need a hip replacement. I am going for an X-ray to see if that's the case. Then I'll have only horrible neuropathy on my plate. Wishing you the best.
