Glued wound swollen a week after.
Hello, I cut my thumb open 2 weeks ago while shooting my handgun. I had the wound glued shut and was prescribed antibiotics for a week. A little over a week later around Christmas time it started to swell up just a little bit around the wound after I got the tape off of it. The wound has healed up well and it doesn't look like there is anything wrong with it. It's been swollen for a couple days now and I can't really bend my thumb like I was able to before. The swelling isnt to bad but still enough to notice a bit if you look closely. Sometimes I get little pains but it's only for a second then they go away. Should I be concerned? Or is it normal?

Prior to surgery due to allergies I had a complete allergy panel. It did test for glue, allergies, and I am allergic to all glues and adhesives. When I went to have the test results read the specialty allergy group said they saw a horrible results from glue being used to seal a wound. They indicated that sometimes the whole surgery had to be redone, but I hope yours is just a topical reaction. I truly believe that an allergy test on metals and surgical products needs to be done on everyone prior to surgery. Best of luck my Surgeon didn’t suggest it. I asked for it before hip replacement And I’m so glad I did.
@jdmdev1225 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I haven't had any wounds glued shut, but my thought leads toward the fact the serous fluids that would normally be able to be released, cannot get out. So there might be a pocket of fluids there? Any underlying scar tissue might be preventing that release, and creating the bump and pressure.
Does this sound plausible to you? What was the reasoning to go with glue rather than stitches? You say this was after a range incident. Perhaps clearing a semi-automatic pistol and slide caught you, tearing up the side of your index finger?

I'm not to sure. As I mentioned it was perfectly fine until I'd say Christmas day it started swelling up a bit. And Christmas Eve I took the tape off that they put over the glue. I just can't afford another visit to urgent care so im just making sure it's nothing serious.
I went with glue because needles and stitches scare me, I've never been good with needles so I just went the better route in my head.
What happened is I placed my thumb in the wrong position and when I shot my gun the slide came back and cut it open.
@jdmdev1225 My suggestion is to massage the area several times a day, and see if that will alleviate the discomfort. I'm not a doctor, and this is what I can offer.

Dermabond is glue that has become widely used by surgeons to close wounds since FDA approved it in 1998. It has also caused severe contact dermatitis in many patients… incidence estimates published in the literature range from 2-14%of patients. I experienced a severe rash similar to poison ivy covering my entire forearm after a surgery several years ago.
