GERD after Reclast
I’ve had GERD, actually Laryngopharingeal (throat reflux) for years, but have had it well under control for many months. It came back with a vengeance a couple of weeks ago, and the only change I can think of is my recent Reclast infusion. Has anyone had this? If so, did it resolve with time? Thank you.

I had my Reclast infusion on March 13, 2026. I am experiencing Acid Reflex. I'm taking Pepsid, 20 mg, 2 X a day and following acid reflex protocal. I first was given Alendronate (pill) but was really ill with tummy issues and acid relex. I was told I was allergic to Alendronate and stopped taking it. So the thought was if I had an Reclast infustion it would bypass the stomach and not give me acid reflex. So much for that thought. I will not take another Reclast infusion. I will try something else, provided my health insurance will cover it. One more thing, my acid issues are more in my throat this time around. I'm hoping it will pass. I wish I had a direct answer for you. Take care.

2 ReactionsI would be tempted to try other measures to reduct acid reflux such as elevating head of the bed, etc.
Sorry for these issues with Reclast and GERD. @sbauer4 "so much for that" (!) really grabbed my attention. I just saw my rheumatologist last week and he said the IV infusion "bypasses the stomach." O boy, my decision-making just got harder!

2 ReactionsAs someone who had GERD affecting the throat many years ago, I am sorry the Reclast seems to have led to this reaction. Based on my research years ago, I decided to try adding L-Glutamine to my diet along with the other usual dietary recommendations (e.g., reducing caffeine). I can't guarantee it was the L-Glutamine that made the difference, but after years of being on Prevacid and Prilosec, my GERD symptoms improved and I stopped taking prescription medications for it.
I did this faithfully for years until my breast cancer diagnosis when I needed to stop taking most supplements, including L-Glutamine. I think it is now a supplement I should avoid....lousy news.
I mention it in case you want to do some research on it if your symptoms persist. Hope your symptoms fade and disappear. Reclast is no walk in the park for many.

7 ReactionsIn addition to many other side effects, I have had GERD symptoms. Like you, I've had mine under control. That symptom passed within a few weeks after I noticed it. Good luck to you!

5 ReactionsMy infusion is Zolodronic Acid, once annually. I hadn't thought about it, but my swallowing issues began about the same time as starting the Z. I was diagnosed with GERD, even though I get acid reflux only about once weekly and it responds well to Tums. They wanted to put me on prilosec daily, but I chose not to. When I had the diagnostic endoscopy done 2 years ago, I was told the procedure would dilate my esophagus some and help with the swallowing. My experience is the opposite. Swallowing meat, crusty breads, and potatoes has become an issue more frequently since the endoscopy. I'm now the last one done eating at any social gathering and at home, because I have to chew my foods so finely or risk a trip to the bathroom to attempt to vomit the obstruction up. How often do you get Reclast infusions?

1 Reaction@kc7adk54 This was my first one, I had it earlier this month.
@aspirecreative I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I hadn't made connection between osteoporosis infusions and GERD until I started reading this forum this week.
I have had so many health issues after my one and only Reclast infusion in August 2024. Worsening GERD is just one of them. My doctor wanted to put me on a daily dose of a PPI, I refused. PPI's have serious long term side effects too. I have cut out alcohol, coffee, highly acidic foods, but still have issues with GERD. I have yet to find anything that works to help relieve the morning cough, raw feeling in my throat, with throat clearing throughout the day, etc. Does anyone know of any natural supplements that really works to help lessen the symptoms of GERD? I'm looking for answers too.

1 Reaction@msmaz57 Sorry to hear you have GERD. It really sucks. I've had GERD (verified by the upside down drinking barium scan) for 30+ years. I've been on Prilosec (20mg/day) the entire time. Good news is that it spared my esophagus (no Barrett's verified by an upper endoscopy). I'm trying to get off Prilosec as I have a T-Score of -4.0. Just had my 10th Evenity Shot. Not excited about either Reclast or Prolia. Sadly, I'm having spill over burning and coughing in spite of continuing Prilosec. So, I'm not sure if it's no longer working or my symptoms are worse. Dang it.
I am exploring 'natural' options and my Facebook page is flooded. I'm using Jelly Bellys gummies with DGL. 100mg per gummy and I'm using 3 a day. I ordered (but haven't received yet) another supplement that uses Alginate. If that doesn't work, then I'll test a very expensive option called Terra Health that uses a mysterious tree sap. I swear, I'm exhausted by my osteoporosis issues and to have this GERD on top...very depressing. Like you, my life is narrow on enjoyment (coffee, acidic foods, etc.), but the pain is so bad that it's not worth the risk.
