General Information on Coming to Mayo Clinic

Posted by krsdngarver @krsdngarver, Nov 29, 2022

I have been attempting to get a diagnosis for undoing chronic abdominal pain for ao long now. I have had a complete GI work up within Cleveland Clinic with no luck and am considering coming to Mayo Clinic. I would be going to either Minnesota or Florid and I am from Indiana.
How do I start the process? If I come out to one of the facilities and am seen by their emergency department is there a chance of them admitting me and me being able to stay there until they figure out a diagnosis?
Honestly any advice on steps to take, how to get started, information on visits/stays and processes would be so appreciated.

Hello @krsdngarver, welcome to Connect. I'm sorry you're struggling with undiagnosed chronic abdominal pain. How frustrating when tests do not prove the cause. About how long have your symptoms persisted?

Thank you for inquiring with Connect on how to start the process of being seen at Mayo Clinic. Below is a direct link to apply at any of the 3 Mayo locations:

Unfortunately, I can not answer your question about going to a Mayo emergency department for possible admittance. It may be a risk, especially if you are traveling from Indiana. I recommend applying online as soon as possible to get the ball rolling, and ask your PCP to prepare your medical records and health history for submission. You may self-refer however a doctor's referral is best. Have you communicated with your doctor about your desire to be seen at Mayo?

Yes I have mentioned to my doctor about wanting to be seen. My symptoms have been going on since July. I've had 5 inpatient stays, several ER visits, and have had some GI consultation at Cleveland Clinic. I just feel Mayo Clinic may be best for me. When I have mentioned it to my doctor she has said to do the self referral.

I'm glad your doctors are on board with you referring to Mayo Clinic. That certainly is a lot of ER visits and inpatient stays since July. What are your doctors telling you thus far? Are they stumped by your symptoms? Do you not feel Cleveland Clinic is qualified to diagnose properly?

When I had chronic symptoms for a few years, and no one was able to properly diagnose, I did a lot of researching. Although Dr. Google can be dangerous, have you researched your symptoms? Do you have gut feelings (pardon the pun) about your GI symptoms?
