Gagging and vomiting 8 months post transplant

My son had his BMT this past March. He struggled with gagging and vomiting for several months later. Around late June those things finally stopped and he has been feeling great. However, this past Tuesday he had his second round of childhood vaccines. The next day the gagging and vomiting returned. It got bad enough that we took him to the Emergency Room. He's home now, but is still having problems with gagging but so far hasn't vomited. Anyone else experience this?

Hi @wakop. So glad to see you here again. I’ve been wondering how your son has been recovering from his BMT. When we left off he was having all this nausea which isn’t unusual in the early months. I am sorry to see it’s returned.

It’s also not unusual when we’ve had a BMT to have unexplained symptoms pop up from time to time. In my experience, if I wait a day or two, they usually disappear. I’m hoping this will be the case for your son. In any event if it continues it’s important to contact his BMT team to rule out any potential gvhd issues. At this point in time they would/could come on gradually so it’s good to just keep notes and then if something persists you have a start date and potential precipitating events.

Has he tried any anti-nausea meds such as sublingual Zofran, or ginger tea/candied ginger? Also, a little trick that works is to sniff isopropyl alcohol. Like the little cleanse-prep pads. It can provide a quick sensory distraction from nausea.

@wakop, I wanted to check in. How is your son doing? Did you find anything that helps with the gagging?
