Had anyone had success using gabapentin for anxiety? My dr wants me to try it.

Never helped me. If you have situational anxiety it may not help that.

Do you know that you have to taper down from it under supervision, if you want to get off of it? If you have situational anxiety, please try to find help to remedy your situation. And if you are having what is being diagnosed as anxiety reactions, that aren't tied to anything going on in your life, please have your thyroid and parathyroid blood levels checked.

@colely It can work, for pain, but to use it for anxiety sounds like a very bad idea. I was put on it, experimentally, for migraines. It turned me into a zombie.

@colely I just looked it up. Just as I thought, gabapentin prescribed as an anti- anxiety medication is an off-label prescription. The Food and Drug Administration do not recommend it. My Neurologist prescribing a gabapentin every day to prevent migraines was an off- label prescription. In my case, my doctor was working with a drug company to see if the drug company could get approval for this drug to be approved for use as a migraine preventative. She was being paid per patient head. I did not know this, at the time.

@colely

I switched from GabaPentin [can't remember dosage] direct to PreGabalin/Lyrica with no noticeable effects.

@colely

If it can help why not try it? Almost anything she could have prescribed could have side effects and would be a take and see situation.

I have been on Gabapentin for almost 7 years now. It helps with pain and it helps regulate my mood. I did try to stop taking it one time. I am bad about that, and it was a bad idea. I became very irritable and I could tell that I was in withdrawal, although it was more a withdrawal that felt like anxiety and panic. Everyone is different. I know that it is used for neuropathy as well. Regardless, if you start taking it, be sure and taper off of it and ask your doc about it.

It takes the edge off of my anxiety from effexor withdrawal. I know I'll have to wean off of it someday, and not looking forward to it!
