Gabapentin for Anxiety?

Posted by rclouv @rclouv, 1 day ago

I’ve struggled with anxiety for over 7 years. Tried many SSRI’s and SNRI’s and buspar. Minimal help. Supplemented
with klonopin (posted this recently as a topic). I just started using 300 mg gabapentin (100 mg in morning and 200 mg) in evening). Seems to be helping. Anyone else using it?

My 90+ mother used it for anxeity and sleep. She went to a hospital for seniors with psych. issues and the doctor thre prescribed it.

I just got an Rx for trigeminal and occipital neuralgia which are very painful. I am also trying to avoid using Klonopin which I have used at teeny doses sparingly for years and which seems to affect my memory the next day.

Is it helping your anxiety?

It doesn't take my anxiety away, but it does take the edge off. I take a total of 1300mg a day, spread out three times a day.

I tried a very small dose last year and was impressed. It made me feel very nice with a heightened sense of well being. Quite calm and happy. I was surprised it made such a difference. Unfortunately, I couldn’t tolerate it due to blurred vision. Sigh. Wish I could take it, but the blurred vision makes it impossible.

I found that when I was taking Klonopin for anxiety due to trauma event that has caused long term PTSD, it had a rebound effect each afternoon when it was wearing off. I was finally able to stop that medication after six years.
I was started on Neurontin in 1999 for Fibro and once I became intolerant of it moved to Lyrica.
I now take 50 in the morning and 50 at night if the pain is bad. I did take 100 x a day, but as I can gotten much older, I need less ( now age 76, diagnosed at age 43). I have never stopped exercising though, which really helps when you have this condition. I also have always used a very old muscle relaxer which works well if you must work. Skelaxin- and there is now a generic also. I use this two times a day 800 mg per.

( Lyrica )should say 100 mg once or twice a day. I was on Neurontin at 2400 mg a day when I was first very sick and in constant extreme pain, which helped; but it can make you pass out from such an extreme dose. I had several accidents falling. If someone gives you a new medication, always go online and read everything you can about any medication before starting something new.
