Gabapentin for chronic headaches causes constipation

Posted by busylady @busylady, Jun 6 9:08am

Has anyone found that Gabapentin causes constipation? I have taken Gabapentin for 30 years and have been suffering from constipation for just as long. I take Metamucil every day to try to combat this and I also try to incorporate prebiotics in my diet from food such as fermented sauerkraut, pickles and olives. All of this does help but the Metamucil “gasses me up” so much that it is difficult to be around people because of uncontrolled gas!
I take MiraLAX when needed. I was once on Linzess but that didnt really work any better than MiraLAX, and it was an “out of pocket” expense.
Any input is appreciated. I am grateful to belong to this group where we can all share our “GI issues” and many times get helpful tips in return.

I've been taking high doses of gabapentin for the neuropathy in my feet for 10 years, and I haven't had any serious issues with constipation, only occasionally. It more than likely has been due to my diet, but I take several OTC supplements, and my bloodwork is always fine.
I'm lactose intolerant, so my intake of dairy products is really limited, no chocolate candy, donuts, ice cream, butter, cake, etc. You know, the good stuff in life.

I also take gabapentin for focal dystonia of my left foot which causes pain when I walk. I also take other drugs at times , such as baclofen and clonazepam.

I have also found that meta mucil makes me gassy but high fiber cereal , like Kashi berry fruitful, lots of fruits and vegetables, AND LOTS AND LOTS OF WATER! If you drink coffee, make sure you drink equal amounts of water. Also, a glass of prune juice, the one with lots of pulp, evrery night before bed.

Hope it helps.
