Frequent bowel movements
I had colon cancer surgery 8 months ago. Stage one thankfully. One of my symptoms was 10 to 12 bowel movements a day. After all these months and successful surgery and recovery I am still having this many movements. I eat lots of fiber and occasionally take Metamucil as my doctor recommended but doesn’t help. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, it is still active but sometimes it takes time for others to see your posts. Also if you reply to a post it is more likely to get their attention. You never know what settings people have.
I just bet you are not alone in this, I know for fact my next door neighbor lady has exactly the same problem. She said that now she wished she had opted for the bag, at least she could go somewhere without fear of a mess.
I hope some others with this issue will jump on and talk with you.
What have you tried to make it better?
My surgeon tells me everyody is different when it comes to post operative or post chemo. That really doesn't halp a lot. He did suggest added fiber and I have had an inkling of success with that. It helps consolidate my bowels so supposedly they will be more productive and therefore fewer. Not sure f that is working.
I also take immodum afew days week so that I can continue my part-time job. It works well so the two days I work (5 hours per day) I have been bowel movement free on those days. I know that is not real good also. Whether or not I take the immodium does not creare added BMs on the other days. At least not as much as I have been able to monitor it.
I will keep looking, and thank you so much for your input. At least I know 'm not the only one. Best of luck to you.

I actually prefer this to the bag. I had incredible trouble with the bag the 5 -6 weeks I wore it.
Thanks for your input Chris. I have had a couple of replies to my posts and they are much appreciated.
I have tried added fiber, Benefiber I think it's called and I believe it does help by consolidating the product of my bowels.
I'm so glad this discussion is still active.

Apparently frequent bowel movements are not a big issue in modrn medicine. I don't know of any research being done to find a cure or at last some sort of relief.
Knowing that I will be having 30 to 40 bowel movements a week for the rest of my life is not any kind of quality of life. It makes simple tasks, such as going out for groceries, or to fill a presciption, quite problematic.
Hopfully som day thre will appear an answer to this problem.
In the mean time, I wonder how many people, or what percent of the population has to deal with this issue?

Last December I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. I had surgery the removed some of my colon and now I wear a bag. I have frequent bowel movements right after eating. I have counted 10 to 15 times a day! This has put a stop to eating out or eating in the company of others. If I need to go somewhere, I schedule when I eat, I won't eat before going to an appointment. I started chemo in March last year and am still having treatments, but they have reduced my drugs considerably. The doctor told me I will be on chemo the rest of my life, however long that may be. When I first started chemo I had severe diarrhea, but now it isn't near as bad. I wish I only had 1 bowel movement a day like I used to before all this unpleasantness came to be!
Hi Hopenjoy, I've been dealing with this since the first week of July when I had my colostomy bag removed. Interesting that fiber has been somewhat helpful to me. And yes, I will keep looking.
The only thing I have tried that has worked at all is Immodium. It gives me a couple of days BM free. I use it on the two days a week I work. It has worked well for about 2-3 months until this past Saturday when it didn't work. Then along came Sunday and I could barely get out of the bathroom at all.
It took me a total of 9 months to have normal formed bowel movements. I still have to go whenever I eat anything, about 3-4 times a day, but at least they are not lose . The Metamucil and fiber made mine worse,
