Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

Posted by suze317 @suze317, Oct 17, 2018

I have to make a decision on Forteo vs. Tymlos and am not sure what to choose. Forteo has been around a lot longer, but has to be refrigerated. Tymlos only around 1 1/2 years but is shelf stable and seems to have less side effects and less issues with calcium. Can anyone offer their perspective? Thank you!

The dose is adjustable and I could ramp up on Tymlos. Forteo is full dose only and I could not tolerate it. I feel a lot stronger after a year on it. DEXA in March.

Beware of overdosing on beta carotene (too much carrot juice, especially)-- there have been cases of retina damage. In one case, a patient with stable macular degeneration ( documented as stable for years) received a juicer as a gift and overdid it on carrot juice, and her retina destabilized into geographic atrophy over the next 6 months. I say this as an eye doc, who owns a juicer and loves fresh vegetable/fruit juices! I just don't juice massive quantities, and I use as a guideline only consuming the juice of as much of the veg/fruit as I would consume by chewing.

General note about traveling with Forteo. I found a “system” on Amazon called an “Insulin Cooling Bottle Medicine Cooler”. It basically consists of a double-walled metal thermos with a “bio-gel” freezer bottle that drops inside it. It comes with a thermometer to place inside the cooler, but since it only shows the current temp, I am using a high-low-current thermometer that I have. That way I can see not only what the current temp is (Forteo needs to be kept between 36-46 degrees Fahrenheit), but what the highest and lowest temps have reached while the Forteo is in the thermos. I tested the system, checking the temps every 8 hours, and it maintained the safe temps for more than 36 hours. I’ll be using this on an upcoming trip instead of the soft-side cooler with freezer blocks I have used in the past (that only worked “OK”).

Forteo has a $4 co-pay if you register on their site and provide that number to your pharmacist.

Only if you qualify financially! I was told this too but we are retired and our passive income is above their threshold.

Hmm interesting. I was told you qualify if you have commercial health insurance regardless of income. It doesn’t work if you’re on Medicare

I have been on both. Right now I’m on Forteo. The only side effect I had with Tymlos was dizziness. So I did injections at night. I’ve been on Forteo for 2 months now, no side effects so far.
The FDA approved Forteo for long term use. The 2 year limit has been over-ruled.
Although, Forteo has to be refrigerated, I don’t find that a hassle. When traveling, You can take a thermal type lunch bag with an ice pack and it should do just fine.

@windyshores thank you for sharing your experiences across so many helpful posts!

Do you know if there are any published articles or comments from other physicians or Tymlos themselves re: this appealing option to start lower & gradually increase by # of clicks?

None of my docs have heard of this - their Tymlos reps don't seem to know or mention it either. Just wondering if it's something your doc was smart enough to suggest because you experienced problems prior - or if it's a known approach across the board?
