Forteo daily shots for 18 months

Posted by lucy5812 @lucy5812, Dec 21, 2025

My doctor wants me to start the Forteo daily shots for 18 months. I have severe osteoporosis in the lumber area
He told me that he strongly believes in those shots , and once I do the entire 18 months my bones will build back up and I do not need any medications after that .
Anyone that have done these shots ? Any feedback please?

@tonilynn I am curious whether those of you who say insurance will cover DEXA ONLY every 2 years are Medicare eligible? If so, you might want to check out the 2 year rule when you are receiving treatment. My understanding is that Medicare allows DEXA every year during treatment.....and my not generally well-informed PCP actually knew this.

@rjd that is good to know. I will check it out!

Good to know. But not everyone has $100 for a co-pay!

I understand that. $100 is still a lot of money but I did not want to start 24 months of TYMLOS and not know if I was improving. My worst fear was
TYMLOS would not work for me and waiting for the next DEXA Scan would have cost me more bone loss. But, like I said, since the doctor ordered it, insurance covered it. Ask your doctor or let him know you are uncomfortable starting any treatment without testing first.

You have to feel confident in what treatment you choose.

@kar50 Regarding the need to wait for two years before health plan covers Dexa scan, I am doing a self-pay Dexa after one year. I got a cost estimate from hospital, and found it not high priced. Also found I can make $50 monthly payments. Knowing my one year Dexa numbers is worth the cost to me.

@tonilynn if your Md puts medically necessary for treatment your insurance will cover it. See if that will work for you.

I did 24 months of Forteo in 2016. followed by one shot of Prolia and then 5 years of Raloxifene . I am now on Teriparatide for 18 months and then may risk another shot of Prolia followed by Ralozifene again. I found not tolerate Bisophomates and perhaps this is why Forteo worked so well for me. It does seem to have some slight side effect of a bit of brain fog and stomach upset for me, but I am very grateful for this medication.

@broken13

Teraparatie is the generic for Forteo. Also, research tells me that insurance will cover Dexascan under certain circumstances. I had a compression fracture a year ago and have been on teraparatide since. Dr. Visit in January , so I’ll keep you posted on the scan.

Hello Lucy, good luck with your decision regarding Forteo. I have been injecting Forteo for 13 months with no side effects. I inject at night before bed. My 6 month blood tests (calcium serum, albumin, Vitamin D) are fine. I supplement with additional calcium. My only concern is that my endocrinologist and health plan don't do DEXA scans until 2 years on Forteo, so I have no data on the bone building. However, I feel stronger and when I recently tripped on an uneven sidewalk and severely sprained my ankle, I was surprised nothing was broken, it was a bad fall on concrete, so maybe my bones are stronger? Yes, I understand that after 2 years you must transition to a biophosphate to maintain bones, and I am very concerned about this. She is recommending Recast but I need to research before I make this decision at the end of 2026. I researched and was hesitant for a long time before starting Forteo, but I am glad I made the decision. Good luck to you.

@kar50 You can have a DEXA scan even if your doctors say only every two years because of insurance. My Rheumatologist told me I could have one on my own (with no insurance coverage and it would be about $100). I thought that was worth it!

I'm on Forteo and I haven't had any side effects. My endo told me I might have to take Reclast at the end of my treatment to make sure any bone regrowth will "stick".
