FND , Functional Tremor. Diagnosis
I was just diagnosed by a Neurologist who specializes in movement disorders with Functional Tremor. It is type of FND.
According to the information I was given, there is uncontrollable shaking of a body part, usually an arm or leg in Functional Tremor.
My tremors started less than 2 months ago. The episodes of arm, hands, legs, and feet I get are sporadic, fast motion shaking.
This is NOT the same as essential tremor.

Is there any medication you can take ? What is the cause of the Functional Tremor?
@AlwaysHopeful
The doctor gave me handout that explains it. It’s uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body, usually an arm or a leg. This is due to the nervous system not working properly, but NOT due to an underlying neurological disease.
I was told mine is due to my high stress situation. I start shaking when I get nervous.
There are different things that can be done to treat it like exercises to retrain the brain. I need to do that, and manage the stress I’m feeling.
How are you doing?
@celia16
Thanks for asking. I’m actually worse. I have so much stress, and it’s grown because well meaning people are telling me to do things that relieve stress!
Anytime my toes start wiggling by themselves I know a tremor spell is coming.
So sorry! Stress can be a bear. I’ve been relying on talk therapy, which is enormously helpful, but considering meds. The best thing for me would be to change some things in my personal life, but that’s not a likely option right now.
@celia16 I feel like I’m spinning out of control. I’m trying to stay calm and focused, but it’s not helping.
My brain has physical problems so I’m wondering if that is preventing me from relaxing.
Mild Alzheimer’s could be messing with me now.
Life is never dull, right!
That’s right. It seems like whenever I get things to a good spot, something new pops up. What’s the saying….Man makes plans and God laughs. I seem to be playing catch up a lot.
You do have a lot on your plate. My therapist has encouraged me to decide what I chose to do or not do. I have that power and should do it with confidence. And, I should say how I feel and what I need. I’m getting better at doing it.
Do you have a good support system? I should, but not really. I’m trying to build one.
@AlwaysHopeful @celia16 This morning I had a thought that one of my medicines is more than likely causing my Tremors.
I’ve been on a medicine that is a stimulant for the last year. I have Hypersomnia so I am sleepy during the day.
The med is Armodafinil. I have sent my neurologists a message on their portal.
I’m also going to slowly stop using it even though it will make my daytime sleepy state worse.
That's interesting and good that you made the connection. I've noticed that many medications have tremors as side effects. Take care.
Have you looked up the medicine on the internet and checked if tremors are one of the side effects? Also, you could ask your pharmacist.
