First visit and nervous

Posted by bubbleslanie1965 @bubbleslanie1965, Nov 8, 2023

I am coming for my first visit next week. I thought it would be a 5-7 day trip, but my appointments are in 4 different time spans, which would require 4 trips from Michigan to Rochester and there are like 16 different appointments. It seems like a lot, even though I want to get answers. How do I make this more coordinated? I can’t afford to miss work and the cost of traveling 4 times.

I suggest you call the appointment desk and explain your situation and ask if there is a possibility of consolidating appointments. The appointment phone number is usually on last page of appointment list, if cannot find, try 507-538-3270.

Some tests / appts are harder to schedule so you may have to risk moving earlier appts to a later date if want all in same week.

I assume a provider appt is one of the first appointments. You can always go to initial appointments and then while there see if can get into any other appointments earlier. There is never a guarantee, but worth asking. Some areas / tests allow 'checkers" , you go to desk and ask if can wait in case of an cancelation, fair warning, many people do this and you may not get in.

Wishing you the best.

Often the initial appointments determine the direction of subsequent appointments. Once the unknowns are known, the rest of the appointments usually are either rearranged, changed, or cancelled all together. It’s like when you pack for a trip to someplace you have never been. When you return you find you overpacked because you didn’t know exactly what the weather was going to be.
Once you get started I would bet dollars to doughnuts your schedule will change early and often. However I also believe you will find your experience at Mayo to be amazing. While the shear size of the Mayo Clinic complex can at first be daunting, you will soon find out why people from everywhere have made the journey.
And by the way while you are there, please don’t hesitate to ask any employee or volunteer for help or assistance. They truly love to help.

Call the clinic, ask to speak to the scheduling department, tell them your dilemma. They are wonderfully helpful in trying to get the different departments to adjust. Sometimes their schedules are packed however.
They condensed my original multi days (even staying over a weekend!) to 4&1/2
consecutive days.

I needed a test that they could not do as i was there only 4 days and they couldnt get me in....So i had to do it back home.
The things they figure out are amazing and not like anything you or your regular doctor would ever consider.
At least that was my experience and what i took away from going there.

I am 2 hours north of my treatment center atUCLA. Presently, I am still able to drive in and I go every other month but in time, I may have to go more often and my driving in may become more difficult. I have considered renting an efficiency furnished apartment on a month to month basis and close to UCLA, when and if my treatment becomes more frequent and more aggressive. It would be more expensive but staying alive can be more expensive and the expense may only be for a few months. Perhaps such a plan would be beneficial to you. This is the hand that has been dealt to us and we have to play it as best as we can. Best of Luck !

@bubbleslanie1965, how are you doing? Are you at Mayo Clinic this week?

I did get some answers and have 1 more trip- they were good helping to consolidate into 2 trips instead of 4. I have fibromyalgia and some blood pressure and thyroid issues. I went right back to work the day after coming home so I am still processing the whole experience.

Talk to your coordinator immediately so they can help. Also, some tests can be done in your hometown. Try discussing with your PCP. Hope this helps. It can appear overwhelming at first. Mayo Clinic is through but reasonable in all areas. You are important!
