First Appointment at Mayo Clinic in Arizona

Posted by themurfs @themurfs, Mar 3, 2024

My husband called to schedule an appointment for a second opinion for his prostate cancer treatment. We sent in all his pathology and scan results. When MAYO called back my husband was given an appointment with a Urologist at Mayo. Can anyone help us with what we can expect for this first appointment? We had really hoped we would be scheduled with a Radiology Oncologist so we could discuss treatment options. It seems like we are having to start back at the beginning with having to see a urologist. We live in Oregon and will be traveling out of town, obviously, so we want to make certain booking flights, and a hotel room will be worth this first appointment. We would really like some feed back on this as we navigate what to do. Thank you!

@gonzaler84 you should check that you are schedule for a PSMA PET scan. A regular PET scan is not as precise. You may have to advocate for the PSMA PET scan. It’s prostate specific!

@themurfs Hi. Am wondering if you were treated by a Medical Oncologist at Mayo. If yes are you able to share who you met with at Mayo?

Thx!

Did you ask for a second opinion with a radiologist or a cancer second opinion? I would suggest keeping an open mind and see what options the doc is proposing and why. I went in for a second opinion with a CCC GU and he told me "that he didn't find me interesting and that he only treats stage 4 cancer." I busted out laughing and told him I think that is a really good thing that I am not interesting. He gave me a 70-30% chance of never having to deal with this again. "Live for today and hope for tomorrow".

@themurfs Hi, ty for your feedback. The PET scan is scheduled for Sep 14 - so this coming Monday. Next meeting is with urologist on Sep 18 to review results and then start scheduling initial visits once the data is available for review.

Ty again...

Cheers

@colleenyoung Ty for your message. I met with the GU Oncologist, Dr Schweizer at Fred Hutch and this is a brief summary and next steps:

1. Initially the PSMA Pet scan showed a lesion on one of my ribs that might be cancerous- further analysis of the images by the GU and his team determined that this is not the case - whew! This was a huge positive for me...
2. Cancer is focused on the prostate and a few lymph nodes so treatment will focus on this area

Next steps:
1. Plan is to take Orgovyx, Abiraterone and Prednisone together with the radiation treatment
2. I have an upcoming appt with the RO to review the radiation treatment and discuss length of treatment and any other topics that fall under radiation treatment process

Luckily, at Fred Hutch I have an appt with Dr Dr. Michael R. Folkert, the RO coming up in early Oct. He does both the radiation treatment and does extensive research on spacers to help protect the body around the prostate from radiation exposure. It will be good to have him as the RO for my treatment.

I welcome the group's input on what considerations I should factor to help me prep for the upcoming appt with the RO.

Thx all...
