I’ve had many and have one now. I have had two surgical releases. Here’s what the doc told me.

It’s much more important to be able to grip and grab than to have a straight finger to point or hit pin pads with. So don’t tape to keep it straight. Do continue to use a brace to straighten it for a while and then do repetitive flexing to make fist, open hand. Rinse and repeat.

I just happened to stumble across this post. I am a retired hand therapist and have treated many trigger fingers. Once the "catching" gets to that point you might be able to release it by totally relaxing the hand and using the other hand to hold down the big knuckle /fully bent position while gently pulling the smaller knuckles straight. This of course is a temporary fix.
I recommend seeing a qualified hand surgeon who may opt to first try a steroid injection or recommend a surgical release. The surgical releases that I saw were very successful. After a surgical release (or maybe injection) see a certified hand therapist to learn tendon gliding exercises and scar mobilization techniques to maintain your range of motion. It's important to get and keep the tendon gliding. The therapist can make a splint to allow/promote this tendon glide. An immobilization splint in "straight" position, might be indicated for night use.

Awesome to have trained expertise weigh in. I’m only informed as a result of five prior trigger fingers, plus one current and one supposed dupuytren - though I believe that is a misdiagnosis.
Welcome!!

lidocaine patch?

lotsofpain,
I'm not sure about pain on the back of your hand, since trigger finger typically causes pain on the palm (flexor tendon) side. Perhaps when you "reset" your finger, you strained the joint or the extensor tendon/back of hand. It's really hard to say how to relieve the pain without knowing what the cause and structures involved.
Maybe the cream your GP gave you is lidocaine or another pain reliever such as Voltarin and if you know how to use kinesiology tape, that could help, but I recommend you see hand specialist either a hand surgeon or a certified hand therapist. Good luck!

Thank you I do use tape whether I do it right not sure any ideas on the right way would be helpful

@lotsofpain
This may not apply to you but with the active trigger finger I have now I do a lotof hand massage with my other hand to relieve pain. And I developed pain on the back side of my hand. I’m older so I don’t have much depth of skin or muscles there any more and I was rubbing hard - I changed how I was rubbing the palm of my hand so I am not impacting the back side. For me that helped
