Findings in recent mamogram??

Posted by dazlin @dazlin, Oct 31, 2019

I just had my yearly mammogram, about 15 months apart. This is my 1st mamogram at Mayo, but I provided last years records and CD to compare. I was notified there were findings that require further testing. My current oncologist has also notified me with further results as, 2 asymmetries are seen in one breast. They suggest more tests. Anyone experience this finding? Doesn't say anything about nodules, or calcification. I do have high density, so I opted for the 3D viewing. Basically for now, we're looking at 2 asymmetries, which I think are pretty common, but this is all new to me. Appreciate any feedback if you've ever been diagnosed with asymmetries. Thanks!!

@twinkie23. it's hard not to worry. I'm glad that further investigations are being done to make sure. It's true that benign results are more common. When is your next mammogram and ultrasound?

Thank you for responding. My diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound are tomorrow. I will write an update after I know results.

“Breast architectural distortion is a descriptive term in breast imaging (mammography, ultrasound, and MRI) to indicate that the breast parenchyma is tethered or indented. The finding per se is not a mass.
Pathology:
Architectural distortion is often due to a desmoplastic (fibrous, aggressive) reaction in which there is focal disruption of the normal breast tissue pattern. There are several features that can be considered as part of architectural distortion:
contour abnormality
trabecular thickening
trabecular disorganization”

Sometimes the definitive determination of a breast anomaly is a biopsy. I went into my biopsy fearing the procedure, but I had no pain, and I’d do it again in a heart beat if there were any question about whether something was benign or cancerous.

The US showed the asymmetry but the radiologist has not received my previous films to compare. If he does not see the same on previous film which was at a different facility, he will need to do a biopsy. He will call me next week.
