Female health: Recurring vaginal itching and swelling

Posted by dmcatoe @dmcatoe, 2 days ago

Am 85 years young. Have recurring problems with vaginal itching and swelling. I think it is caused by yeast infections and I am using Monistat, but don’t understand why it keeps recurring. Any thoughts?

My recommendation would be to go to a dermatologist and get a diagnosis of what it is. It might not be a yeast. It can be a different organism. If it is something different, you will get the right treatment for it.

Hi, I just read your message and I would definitely recommend a visit with your doctor or get a referral to a gynaecologist. It was not a good idea when the government allowed women to buy these products without a prescription for them, vaginal problems are best to be investigated first to determine what type of problem you have so that the right treatment is prescribed, I’m sure it’s nothing serious like seeing blood as a senior female but it’s best to be careful, good wishes.

I agree about getting a proper diagnosis. Whenever someone has recurring vaginal irritation, I suggest they get their blood sugar checked. High glucose levels can cause recurring symptoms like that, even if you use yeast meds to treat them. No doctor thought to check mine. I finally insisted. It went away with proper insulin levels.

Depending on what you find out, you might explore Estradiol cream. It helps promote vaginal health. It’s not like whole body estrogen therapy. There are several threads around here about it.

See a Gynecologist. Could be Vaginal Atrophy. Premarin Cream prescription or similar may be needed.

@dmcatoe
Have you talked to your doctor about this (primary doctor or gynecologist?

If it is recurring, it may be due to side effects from medications, personal hygiene/products used, dryness, etc.

Do you have any medical conditions and are you taking any prescription medications?

Have you changed any personal care products or laundry detergents?

Have you ever been tested for infections that could be causing your symptoms?

You may need something to help with vaginal dryness which could caused itching and irritation which may make you more susceptible to infection if the skin is broken.
