Feeling sick after eating. Can you help, please?
Dear all,
My name is Michaela and my husband underwent Ivor Lewis surgery at the end of 2021, he also received 6 chemo cycles, just in case, because he only had this one tumor and one lymph node which was suspicious. He developed this tumor due to his decades of reflux caused by histamine intolerance which has become worse, we think, after the surgery.
To make a long story short - I now leave out all the details - my question is: He still feels sick after eating after 4 years, he hates eating and is scared of feeling sick afterwards, getting histamine flashes and dumps. Anybody who experienced the same and can help? Thank you so much....Michaela

I was wondering if anyone had leaking from the back tube 4 days after surgery?

I'm sorry to hear of your husband's continued struggles to eat due to his EOE. Unfortunately, aside from PPIs and H2RA inhibitors to manage reflux there are few effective remedies. The use of anti-histamines are generally ineffective in managing symptoms. However, the monoclonal antibody Dupixnet has recently been approved for the treatment of EOE. Also, the use of budesinide slurries has been shown to somewhat effective in providing symptom relief. I've included an overview of their preparation and use for your review. You should discuss these options with his treatment team.
Traditionally, doctors have patients create an Oral Viscous Budesonide (OVB) slurry using the liquid intended for a nebulizer (Budesonide respules). The goal is to make the medicine thick enough to "stick" to the esophageal walls rather than sliding straight into the stomach.
Recently, the FDA also approved Eohilia, which is a pre-mixed version, but many patients still use the manual slurry method due to cost or insurance.
1. The Standard "Splenda" Recipe
This is the most common recipe used in clinical trials (such as those at National Jewish Health).
Ingredients: 1 or 2 Budesonide respules (usually 0.5mg/2mL or 1mg/2mL) + 5 packets of Splenda (sucralose).
Instructions: Mix until it reaches a "honey-like" or "baby food" consistency.
2. Alternative "Vehicles" (Mixing Agents)
If you prefer not to use artificial sweeteners, you can use about 1 teaspoon of the following:
Honey or Agave Nectar: Very popular for its natural thickness.
Maple Syrup or Chocolate Syrup: Often used for children to mask the bitter taste.
Applesauce or Pear Sauce: Good if you prefer a less "sticky" texture.
Neocate Nutra: A specialized hypoallergenic powder often used for those with multiple food allergies.
Critical Rules for Success
For the slurry to work, the medicine must stay in contact with your esophagus.
Do Not Eat or Drink: Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes after swallowing the slurry before eating or drinking anything (including water).
The "Rinse and Spit" Rule: To prevent oral thrush (a common side effect of steroids), you should rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after taking the dose. Do not swallow the rinse water.
Time of Day: It is usually taken twice daily—once after breakfast and once after dinner/before bed.
A Note on the Pre-Mixed Option
If mixing is too difficult, ask your doctor about Eohilia. It comes in a cherry-flavored "stick pack" that is already the correct thickness. You shake it, squeeze it directly into your mouth, and swallow.

If I may, I would like to share something I found out with the help of AI by asking it again and again for 'help' regarding my husbands problems with exactly all these symptoms. He has a massive problem with histamine, and his histamine intolerance caused in the end his surgery 4 years ago. In the last couple of months his dumping and sickness became so awful that he was more than desperate, could not eat anything without feeling sick, etc. I asked ChatGPT again but in a different way (a simple question: what is somebody lacking who suffers from histamine intolerance, and my next question was: how can you trigger your body to produce DAO again) and to cut a long story short: the outcome worked. It suggested to take L-Glutamine (my husband has taken this for almost 2 years now) PLUS butyrate sodium. He bought this one here: https://www.naturitas.us/p/supplements/fatty-acids-and-omegas/optim-butyrate-sodium-butyrate-90-capsules-optim-laboratoire. He has taken this now for 2 weeks and the result was phantastic: He could eat anything, really anything without any problems. He is still in the trial phase and since he had to take painkillers for a day due to tooth problems, he had an awful day yesterday, with diarrhea and you name it - a typical reaction and consequence for him since his surgery), but despite this, it seems like this combination really works. He hasn't had any DS or GE ever since, no sickness, no nusea, no nothing. Really, no kidding. His life changed from 0 tolerance for food to 100% tolerance of any food he could not eat before. I don't know if this helps, but perhaps. This is just our experience, this is no scientific or medical proof or something, he is still in the trial phase, as I said, and I am not suggesting anything here, I only wanted to share this experience with you, which is absolutely personal and individual. Have an amazing and healthy 2026!!! All of you!!! Wishing you all the best!
Michaela
P.S.: After tqo wonderful weeks of an almost totally normal life regarding eating, problems started again, but we think this is due to weather conditions. Every time the weather changes heavily, he starts to feel sick again and gets diarrhea again, not so many dumps, though. He had one in 2 weeks!!! What a success!! So he stays with this new additional supplement, but we need to find something against him feeling under the weather...I will keep you posted. Hope the above helps!!! All the best
