Feedback on Linzess for Irritable Bowel-C or Chronic Constipation

Posted by sue225 @sue225, Mar 9, 2019

I have both of the above-conditions. Took Linzess, (called Constella in Canada) and got terrible stomach pain. Feeling desperate and thinking about trying it one more time. Interested in hearing what kind of experiences other people have had with linaclotide/linzess.

Wow, you have had about everything. I’ve had some pretty good success (not yet 100%) but one thing that I found is that the SIBO / IMO is to a large degree, a symptom and real question is what caused the problem? Mine has worked out to be an enzyme issue with Pancreatic Insufficiency being teh biggest problem. Mine is also tied to a couple other enzyme issues.
If you have not addressed it yet, I think that the MMC (Migration Motor Complex) timing is major. When that is off, either fast or slow then there is a problem. I took antimicrobials to fight the intestine bacteria/archaea, gut health supplements to keep the gut healthy, and MMC supplements to get the timing correct. Ginger, Ibergast, Ginger/Artichoke, Sunfiber, magnesium citrate, MCT oil, and Miralax for timing. The digestive cycle is so slow, it is difficult to figure out what is causing the symptoms. Mine was IMO and sounds like your is a bit different but I think good hydration and MCC are key. Suggest 3 meals per day, no snacks and good, low FODMAP food. Not an easy problem, best of luck.

I’ve been on Linzess for 3 months. I can’t take it every day or then it’s all water. I take it 3 days on then 3 days off. However, I take several meds 450 Pregabalin , 200 amitriptyline 50 juvenix,
All which doesn’t help me go. I have Huntingtons disease just as a reference. I take 1 Linzess every 24 hours. But nothing I’m just back to my normal of going once every 10 days or so. My question; can I take another Linzess at the 12 hour mark since I’m so uncomfortable now? Does anyone know? I’m in Las Vegas, Nevada and getting questions back from a doctor here is like playing craps. Sometimes you win but it’s stacked for the house🤷🏼‍♂️

I have taken Linzess for 3+ yrs...increased to highest dose 290 mg early on. Overall, I don't think it is a " miracle drug" for IBS- C. This yr I stopped for a few months then decided continue ....oooo bad cramping...now the highest dose is too much I guess (no bowel improvement anyway just hurting belly. No more Linzess for me. I take Miralax 1 dose a day, one scoop of Sunfiber 1x day and try to eat right. I'm off costly Rx for now.
Hope my info is helpful.

@mister1 Hi...I don't know what dose of Linzess you take. however I do not recommend doubling doses. I tried taking it a few times before bed and sometimes before dinner....both caused lots of gastro distress. If you take a low dose, have dr increase it to next level and see if that helps.

@anniewee here in Las Vegas it’s like the Wild West. It takes over a week sometimes 2 to get a result from an MRI, PET scan, brain scan to a doctor who is just down the street, walking it over would be easier. I moved from Seattle here to help aging parents and the medical here… well not so much as the physician but the systems in place stink.

I started taking it before breakfast and had a bm immediately after I ate for 2 days. Then nothing. I stopped after 2 weeks.

Eating can get the peristaltic motion started and generate a bm. Not always, but often.

@anniewee thank you, I wouldn’t double without hearing from my doctor only it’s extremely frustrating here since they never return calls. I’m supposed to take 290 mcg of Linzess daily but if I take it every night nothing happens. If I stop for a few days then take it for a couple it will work but then I have to stop again and all I’m left with is gas/bloating.
I have what’s called Huntingtons disease with chronic pain, dizziness, falling, difficulty in walking, swallowing and everything you take has those as side effects… I always laugh saying how will I know the difference. So I’m just back at having to plan for a poop day where I don’t schedule anything accept home time. I’m hoping someone has something else they take to help?
