Ezetimibe and Neuropathy

Posted by tprift @tprift, 4 days ago

I was prescribed Ezetimibe in place of a statin for high cholesterol. I declined to use a statin because of my peripheral neuropathy.
Anyone have experience with this drug?

I used to take it in place of a statin and it worked great. I had no side effects and my cholesterol was about 148 before my diet was good. I stopped taking it when I started low dose statin, but may add it again. Due to my type 1 diabetes, my doctors want me on a statin. But cholesterol is slightly higher now without Ezetimibe, though my diet is great and exercise way up.

Good to hear you didn’t have any side effects. I can’t take a statin with my neuropathy so my endocrinologist has been trying to get me to take ezetimbe but I have been afraid of the diarrhea I read was a side effect so haven’t tried it yet. That side effect is a deal breaker for me. Hmmm.

I've been using it for a couple years now with no side effects... Hope this helps.

Interesting. My cardiologist added it to my lovastatin,
that I have been on for 20+ years. I decided it may have contributed to my increasing numbness and stopped taking it last month. The diarrhea, that I was blaming on the magnesium supplement, is no longer a problem.
I will discuss this with my doctor when I see him in May. See what the lipid panel looks like after eating healthier and losing 12 pounds too.

My Cardiologist added it to the regular dose of a statin (Rosuvastatin) to help lower my cholesterol level. Really did the job. Have not had diarrhea issues. My PN issues are managed by a neurologist. (Gabapentin 400MG -3x a day). Recently switched to an endocrinologist to assist with adjusting my throid levels. Previously being assisted by my GP. He was always reluctant to lower med levels saying things are good. Numbers are now quite positive with that. When in doubt make the change in doctors. We all have to push & and advocate what’s best for our health. All these factor into the overall PN picture to some degree. Good luck to all on our shared journey to relieve the pain & discomfort this condition deals us.

I understand. Luckily, it never bothered me in that way. I actually want to resume it.

Could you try a lower dose until you adjust?

Thank you @celia16 for your suggestion. He told me Ezetimibe might lower my cholesterol 10-15 points. I wasn’t sure that was worth side effects. I am more encouraged to try it now after hearing some of you say you didn’t have side effects. I have a bad track record of adverse side effects with most meds. Once my calendar opens up for a few days I’ll try a half dose to start. I really don’t want to show up for one more visit confessing that I never even tried it. Next visit is September.

I get it. I suppose this med helped me much more than it does most. With just 10 mg of it, I went from cholesterol of high 190s to 140s..and this was with bad diet and obesity. I then lost a lot of weight, changed diet and exercised. Switched to statin (low dose) and cholesterol went up slightly. Sigh. So, thinking of adding Zetia back.

That’s a huge drop due to just the medicine. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck going forward.

I have been on it for at least 15 years. No side effects.
