Experiencing series of bizarre symptoms - visited several doctors now!

Posted by sugarpill @sugarpill, 3 days ago

I'm probably going to miss something, but a general summary of symptoms so far include:

-Right eyelid twitching off and on throughout the day.
-Vertigo sensation, almost dizziness? I don't know how to describe it.
-One-two migraines a month.
-A fuzzy feeling up the right side of my face from scalp to chin at times.
-Tinnitus that comes and goes in predominantly my left ear.
-My vision feels a tiny bit off, but that could be the constant vertigo/weird sensation.
-Random pains keep occurring in my thighs, under my biceps and armpit area, and sometimes feet.

I have a degenerative disc and my lower back hurts whenever I get up or sneeze, but is otherwise mostly manageable. I went to an eye doctor, ENT, and had an MRI and CT done of my brain. Had my liver and kidney checked by ultra sound- everything in that quadrant. It all came up empty. My neurologist canceled my appointment, but I have it coming up soon on 3/6/25.

I also have pain sometimes related to a vein disorder in my testicles. I don't feel that is related to this, but when I had an ultra sound done of them the initial reviewing provider said it could be a blood clot. All other doctors dismissed that worry and assured me it was just a vein disorder nearly a year ago now.

Any help identifying this problem would be most helpful!

Did they check for spinal stenosis? No titers for Lupus or Lyme's Disease? Just spit-balling...

Did you get a MRI of your cervical spine and lumbar spine? Does it show degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, compression of spinal cord or nerve roots (checking for radiculopathy/myelopathy)? Have you seen an orthopedic spine specialist?

Did your neurologist do EMG/nerve conduction studies of your upper and lower limbs? Did they do a skin punch biopsy of your thigh/calf/ankle to test for small fiber neuropathy?

Your symptoms seem tied to central/peripheral neuropathy.

@sugarpill
Did your neurologist do a full neuropathy bloodwork panel and did it show any deficiencies or toxicities? Vitamin deficiencies and toxicities can cause some neuropathy symptoms as well as prediabetes/diabetes or drinking alcohol.

I did have an MRI and XRAY of my spine and they didn't mention anything outside of the degenerative disc disease. They put me in physical therapy for back pain, but nothing related to my other symptoms. My neurology appointment is coming up on 3/6.

I've had blood work panels done three times and everything comes back normal aside from an elevated ALT. I gave up drinking alcohol about six months ago altogether. Probably longer, actually. They haven't run any nerve conduction studies yet.

I'll keep these things in mind, thank you.

Me again! Have these changes been acute or insidious (over time). have you started taking any vitamins, supplements etc on your own?

The vascular pain you mention could be related to a pelvic vein compression issue which can cause all sorts of problems, including neurological stuff. If there's compression of pelvic vein(s), the circulatory system can create escape mechanisms which basically direct the congested blood away from the blockage into other structures, including the spinal space. This is rare but not unheard of. Pelvic compressions include Nutcracker Syndrome (really what it's called, not a joke!), May Thurner Syndrome, MALS, SMAS. Dr. Tomas Scholbach's website has a lot of helpful information and patient testimonials.

Hi,
No they are no bizzare symptoms at all. The problem is many diseases can cause one or more of them. The only solution is to keep pushing for answers. It could take some time but a process of elimination is the only way to a possible answer.
I get those symptoms and more but it is pointless suggesting what it might be for you as I'm not medically trained and just merely the poor sucker putting up with it. The best part is you are you're the strongest advocate for yourself.
Cheers

Nope. I don't take any medication. I did stop taking OTC pain relievers entirely a while back now. No vitamins or anything. The symptoms came on roughly all at once, but the thigh pains and stuff were gradual. The neurological fuzz/dizziness/vertigo feeling is hard to describe, but that came all at once. It has phases of intensity, too.
