Experience with Stapedectomy

Posted by bojaby1950 @bojaby1950, 3 days ago

I had stape bone in middle ear replaced with prosthesis 12 days ago. Things seem louder with BAHA 5 Super Power but not sure what to expect going forward. Would like to hear from others who have had this procedure.

@bojaby1950 There is another Forum section that discusses Stapedectomy's as I've contributed to it in the past. You might want to search the Mayo Hearing Loss Support Group for it as it had numerous responses.

My experience with 2 Stapedectomies was very positive. Mine were a result of having Otosclerosis. May 1st surgery was 20 years ago after I woke up one day and couldn't hear anything in one ear. My Stapes had collapsed and covered the tiny hole to the Cochlea. After surgery I went from deaf in the left ear to hearing again with a good hearing aid. I had my 2nd Stapes surgery 5 years later for the other ear. Both times the rehab was positive, some pain for a few days but nothing Advil couldn't handle. With new hearing aids at the time I was able to function again and began a 15 year teaching 2nd career. But I had to keep upgrading my hearing aids and always tried to have the latest technology.

I was fortunate to have a very knowledgeable ENT at the time who knew about Otosclerosis so he pointed me to a well known expert in Phila. for the surgeries and follow ups. I also had a good Audiologist, which is just as important as they need to fit you with the appropriate hearing aid for your particular hearing loss. i also use assistive listening devices like the Roger Microphone. As I said mine was due to Otosclerosis, which gradually causes deterioration in the bones as well as destroys the inner ear hair cells gradually, so I knew that I would have to keep getting stronger hearing aids. I started with Moderate/Severe loss after the surgeries ad have progressed over 15 years to severe/profound in my left ear and just got a cochlear implant last year for that left ear.

You don't mention what caused your Stapes to collapse. Was it due to Otosclerosis?

Let me know if you have any other questions, but also look for the other Forum where more people discuss Stapedectomies.
