Evenity side effects? Bloating and pulled muscle sensation?

Posted by phxmom @phxmom, Jul 25 1:15pm

Since beginning my Evenity treatment, I have always opted to take the shots in my stomach. The first month I had a rash like reaction. Rather than quit, my doctor suggested taking a Benadryl before the shots and directly after - rash issue resolved! Every month since has been the typical, pain immediately after the injections (I have them both done at the same time - 2 nurses administer) fatigue (probably related to the benadryl) and slight discomfort for the next day or two. Yesterday was my 7th round of shots and the reaction is much different. The left side injection site feels fine, but my stomach is super bloated and the right side injection site is excruciatingly painful (and more distended than the left). The pain goes deep and feels much like a pulled muscle - moving, laughing, coughing... all exacerbate the pain. Has anyone else experienced something like this? I haven't contacted my doctor yet as I am hoping rest, some pain meds and a heating pad might help but so far not doing much. Thank you for help!

I had my first Evenity shots in my stomach last week. Like you, my left side injection site has had no pain, but my right side has felt painful the past 4 days. I noticed the location of the left shot was slightly below my belly button, but the right shot was slightly above. While not excruciating, it is noticeable and feels like a pulled muscle.

I measured where the shots where administered and I'm going to see if the injection site makes a difference for the second round.

I am sorry you are experiencing similar pain, hopefully it goes away soon. It took a least a week for it to subside in my case. My 8th shot will be next week. I will ask if anyone else has had a similar experience and will also make sure they inject into a fattier area this time (wondering if they went into muscle on the right side). I will post back in regarding how it goes - crossing my fingers no more issues.

@phxmom

Were you given the option of having your injections in your upper arms? No one asked me or even suggested that I have the Evenity shots in the belly, thigh, back of legs…. Yikes, that sounds painful in its own right!

I forgot previously (hence the notion that the injections weren’t bothersome) that, at times, the Evenity shots did sting a bit - this was mostly eliminated once a nurse told me that she had taken the syringes out of the fridge about 20-30 minutes prior to my appointment; made a big difference so I requested that each time after that. No bloating, no belly pain, just about the same as having a flu shot. There is quite a bit of material flowing through the syringe, and I remember some “back pressure” and the previously-mentioned sting, but really no lasting effects.

Hope this helps - Evenity worked very well for me.

Cheers!

Thanks so much for your feedback. It is really encouraging to hear it worked well for you - what sort of improvements did you see and what are you taking for maintenance?

They did offer to inject in my arms, but because of my slighter frame, it is easier for them to "pinch an inch" of fat to inject in my stomach. 😉

I am due for shot #8 on Thursday - will be sure to call ahead re: taking out of the refrigerator, I too have noticed the "stinging factor" to be worse when the product is colder. Fingers crossed it goes well. Really looking forward to finishing up this treatment and praying the outcome will be positive!

I have my injections in my upper arm.
The infusion center ensures that the Evenity is not cold before the injection.

Definitely important

Phxmom,

If Evenity is ever approved for another “round” of treatment, I would definitely go for it. I had remarkable improvement in my spine (from -2.5 to -1.0) and improvement in my hip as well, although not as great.

I really can’t say Evenity was alone in this improvement because I also took Tymlos for about 9-1/2 months prior to Evenity but had to discontinue it - I had serious adverse reactions.

My maintenance med is Reclast - I’ve had more infusions than my share and my doc opted not to order it for me this year. I’ll have a repeat CTX in October to see if Reclast is doing the job…still.

Here’s wishing you the best treatment and a positive outcome! Cheers!
