Evenity injection site pain

Posted by neesie0159 @neesie0159, Oct 8, 2023

Last week I had my 3rd Evenity injections. The MA told me with the first ones that they don’t cause sore arms because they’re given subcutaneous instead of IM. I had them in the morning, by evening my arms were very painful and that lasted into the next day. When I called the rheumatology office for advice I was told this never happens. Right. Same experience the second shots, though slightly less pain. Last week I had a different MA give the injections and mentioned the arm pain, she said that shouldn’t happen. Very minimal pain that time until late afternoon, then I was strapping ice packs to my arms.
Has anyone else had injection site pain?

I can't find where I posted this (probably in mid 2024), but I'll recap my experience.
I had my 1st Evenity injections in my arms in Aug. 2023--sore at first, then the pain progressively increased. By 10 pm I couldn't lay in bed with my arms in any position, so I slept in a recliner with my arms over my chest. I have a very high tolerance to pain, so I was very surprised. The pain slowly decreased over the next week.
So for my 2nd set of injections, I had them in my abdomen. Very minimal pain after, very small lumps and I could even wear jeans and waisted pants. It was amazing! For the other 10 sets of Evenity, I had them in my abdomen with no significant discomfort.
When I started Prolia in July 2024, I chose to have the injection in my abdomen--again, no significant discomfort. My 2nd Prolia was given in my abdomen. I'll soon be getting my 3rd, so I'm "sticking" to what works!

I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis a year ago this month. I ‘ve had my 11th injections two weeks ago. I have always received them in my arm. Yes it’s a painful injection but for me, it doesn’t last but a few seconds. I always have a lump the first two days. By the 12-14 day after the injections I have really bad joint pain for about 24 hours. My Dexa scores were in the high 3’s, my hounsfield score was 45, but with in 5mos being on Evenity my houndfield score was 80. My physician believe’s with Evenity he can get me to Ostopenia. I will get another Dexa Scan 4/3 and my last injection on 4/12.

I’m about to have my first injection, so all of your experiences have been informative! Not really encouraging but could be helpful.

Have most taken the year long treatment of Evenity and had good results. I haven’t seen any discussion of results. And what,if any, follow-up medications? BTW I’m 76.

I have also had 3 Evenity injections with huge lumps at the site. I took pictures last time and showed my endocrinologist. She was concerned about the lumps and told me to try benadryl. I got the pills before leaving the facility and they did amazing! Still had a small lump but hardly no pain that time. I go next week for number 4 so I am going to take the pill right before I go in so hopefully another good outcome. Thank you for your post!!

So glad to hear that I am not the only one because when I called either the FDA or the pharmaceutical company they acted like I was the only one with these issues. On my first and 11th round of injections my belly became really swollen and I had a very, very painful lump the size of a golf ball. I ran a low fever for 24 hours Was slightly nauseous, couldn’t eat and was totally wiped out. My belly was so sore that I really couldn’t stand up straight or use those muscles. All the symptoms resolved within the week, but the belly pain and lump took the longest to resolve. If it puts on bone mass, it’s worth it for me.

That’s helpful, makes it worth the disagreeable parts

Thank you all for comments. My expereience with Evenity shots was very different depending on the technique of the nurse administering the shots. I had completed tymlos so I knew that shots in the abdomin were the easiest spot for subcutaneous shots. ( My arms are too thin to get into a fat layer) I knew from my tymlos expereicne that shots have to go into a fatty area.
My first and third shots were adminstered quickly in a 'fold' of fat ( as best they can find) on my abdomin- there was no reaction except minor tenderness and mild lump. My second shots were adminstered by a different nurse very slowly - really slow -directly into my abdomin flesh. FIrst off those shots hurt - and The reaction was servere with swelling. Topical Arnica ( a pekana brand - german) gave some releif and I recommend this. In my case the 'way the shots were delivered' makes a big difference in reaction site issues. Hope this helps... and please know the needles in the Evenity pens are so much finer and gentler than the tymlos pens....

Have any of you had other reactions to Evenity -- other than these injection site problems? I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone with autoimmune illnesses (I have 3 of them). Thanks for any info you can share.

I was glad to hear all resolved within a week. I had my first injection 3 days ago. I had a very distended abdomen and two lumps. The lump resolved in 2 days and the distention has reduced but still there. It was difficult/near impossible to engage my core during some exercise today.....and i"m low on energy.
