Evenity cardiac and stroke side effects update

Posted by serious @serious, Mar 15 7:10am

Does anyone have an update this year, 2024, on these side effects? Has there been new studies or new ways of detecting who might be adversely affected by these effects on using Evenity ahead of time?

It helped me to read the actual studies. Cardiovascular effects were the same in a study comparing Evenity to placebo. They were slightly worse with Evenity than alendronate but the report hypothesized that that could be because alendronate is slightly protective.

Evenity inhibits sclerostin and sclerostin has effects throughout the body, including blood vessels. I have read that more studies are needed on other aspects of sclerostin function that might be affected and there was too much focus on cardiovascular effects. I am more concerned about other effects, such as a possible reduction in acquired immunity (B cells produced in bone marrow). Not much is known as yet.

Most people seems to be doing fine on Evenity and it seems as if post- FDA approval reporting is not revealing a lot of new problems. (I am one of the few I know who is actually having side effects...)

Thank you for your thoughtful reply here. I am puzzled that my endocrinologist, otherwise perfectly rational, seems to think that seniors should not take Evenity for these possibilities.

It would be interesting to see the exclusion criteria for any studies. One that is starting may exclude me because of my bone disorder. My CLL also excluded me from a local trial on a soy based product (Equol) to see if it slows the progression of artery stiffening.

@windyshores Thank you for sharing what you have read in research studies. I am on my fourth month of Evenity and so far have had no side effects. I go to Google Scholar and the search applications available to me on my local university website. With these I can then find peer-reviewed research studies that are published in professional journals.

@serious It is indeed puzzling why your endocrinologist does not prescribe Evenity to his senior patients? Is that correct?

I am having a lot of neurological side effects. I want to emphasize this is unusual. Numbness, pins and needles, pain, dreams, fatigue and most of all, burning sensations all over and especially chest. I decided to post this in case anyone else has this. I had two shots then one shot, and last time was one shot. I would say that the symptoms are progressive. So if anyone does have these- unlikely as it is- don't think that they will improve with continued exposure. Continued exposure at low dose followed by gradual increases, helped me with Tymlos but not Evenity.

Perhaps his Senior patients all have arrhythmias or other heart issues.

@timely I have afib. Evenity is not reputed to cause or exacerbate arrythmias. Reclast was at one time thought to be bad for those with afib, so my doc would not prescribe Reclast during cancer meds. It is since been disproven.

Again the study between Evenity and placebo showed no increase in cardiovascular events. I think that study is more about clots, stroke, heart attack not arrythmias but check.

That is what she told me.

As I’ve posted here many times, I have had 10 sets of injections and pretty side effect free.
Yesterday, I was on treadmill at gym and the TV in front of my treadmill was set on CNN. there was a lengthy commercial for Evenity - I had never seen it before- which was terrifying.
I have always understood that just because I feel okay, doesn’t mean that I’m not undergoing some previously unknown side effect.
I look forward to a DEXA in May and hope for positive news.

This is very interesting. I am 67. My choices were Forteo or Evenity. Since I have had breast cancer twice, my oncologist and endochronologist chose Evenity. Dr McCormick wanted me to do Forteo. But I don't want any chance of bone cancer. I just had a nuclear stress test and blood work prior to Evenity, which delayed me three months. My CT calcium score is 0. I just got cleared for the injections and will start Tuesday! My blood calcium was checked and needs to be checked prior to every injection.

It is all very nerve-racking and confusing, but mostly I am excited to be able to start it.

Best wishes to you.
