Esophageal Thrush
I was at the Emergency Room on Saturday for the worst sore throat I've ever had! I looked in my throat with a mirror and was shocked at what I saw--it was blood red and had white patches and large ares covered in white. It was on the roof of my mouth and I thought it was also in my chest and maybe even my stomach (which is a "pouch" because of my RnY gastric bypass surgery). I had actually gone to the doctor on Friday because of my throat hurting so bad. She didn't do anything and said it was a virus. It was much worse on Saturday. The ER doctor said he thought it was a fungal infection and, again he didn't treat it. However, he did take a swab to see what would grow and gave me a drink with belladonna, mylanta, and something else in it. That gave me a lot of temporary relief from the pain. He ordered Amoxicillan in case I also have strep throat. I'm not taking it until I see my doctor because I think that could make the fungus worse. The ER doctor said the treatment for esophageal thrush is very specific and he didn't want to start me on something that my Internist doctor would have to change. I'll see my Internist doctor tomorrow.
I had never heard of this problem before. I've been reading about it now. I would like to hear from anyone who has had this and what things to avoid in medicines, food, etc. I want to understand how I got this so I never get it again! It is so painful and I feel awful. Anything you can tell me will be wonderful.
Thanks, Gail B

Hello Gail, I found another discussion on thrush that you may want to join in and ask your question there - http://mayocl.in/2tcnkxG. @1968, @rocawire and @rhodan97 are you able to offer any advice or answer any questions for @gailb?
Also the CDC has a lot of information on Oropharyngeal / Esophageal Candidiasis ("Thrush") - http://bit.ly/2pCHZfZ that may be helpful.
Hoping you get some answers quickly.
John
I haven't had any responses here. I have been taking Nystatin orally and the thrush is nearly gone. The doc also prescribed amoxicillin prophilacticly to prevent a seconday infection. I am So much better. I also ate one whole kosher dill pickle each day.
Hi Gail, I'm glad you are doing much better. Sorry no one has jumped in to answer your questions. You mentioned you were looking for what foods one should avoid with thrush. I just did a quick search and found a little information on the Mayo Clinic website on oral thrush prevention - http://mayocl.in/2rwuWhR.
The Mayo Clinic oral thrush section also mentions the Candida cleanse diet and what it does which might be helpful

Katherine @katemnm, Teresa @hopeful33250 do either of you have any information on things to avoid in foods and medicines for oral thrush?
Thanks,
John
@gailb I am glad that you are doing better! Here is some info on this topic from the CDC http://bit.ly/2s8GIO6 At first glance there does not appear to be any information on foods to eat, etc. I am sorry that no one jumped in to answer your question earlier. Teresa
Hi @gailb,
I'm tagging @brit, @elizabethbryant, who have both had experience with thrush, and I hope they will join in with some insight for you. I'd also like to tag @jamienolson, Connect's Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat moderator, to see if she has any thoughts. I'm glad you're feeling better.
I have still from time to time get the same systems. Rough tongue and tiny partical on my tongue. I went to my ent and he said he could see nothing wrong but did give me some medication that did no good what so ever .......it cost $116,00. My sister in law is a director of pharmacy at a big hospital not far from here and her general opinion is that it is coming from my stomach in the form of acid. She suggested I try a dairy product called KIFER. I found it at Publix. I take it in the morning and at night and it seems to help. I also tried rinsing my mouth out with diluted proroxide with water, about 3 tablespoon of proroxide and about 1 cup of water. This also helps.
Please feel free anytime to contact me and even "put in your two cents" maybe it would help my condition. Anyway hope this has helped/
GOD BLESS
Patti
@brit Thanks for adding your "2 cents", Patti. Nice to hear from you! Teresa
Hi, this is Marylou. A couple of comments. My Sjogren's seems to be getting worse. I use Biotene gel, spray and Theramints. I am hoping my Rheumatologist can recommend a new biologic. I also have Psoriatic Arthritis. RHeumatoid personality anyone?! I am a physical therapist so I'm well aware of what's going on.
