Elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH): How is it treated?

Posted by ladybugmg @ladybugmg, Sep 27, 2018

After I had a nonfasting blood test yesterday my doctor tells me that I have elevated PTH. Is anyone else dealing with PTH and if so would appreciate learning about their experience and how it was treated or is untreatable. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, I have elevated PTH as well. Here is a link to a Mayo website about elevated PTH, please click on the link to get more information,

As a result of the PTH being elevated, I also have osteopenia. Do you have bone density problems or kidney stones as well?

Hello @debs4246 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can understand your concern about the high PTH numbers as well as some of the other lab reports that are low. However, I am not a medical professional. Mayo Connect is a patient support forum where we support each other but cannot offer medical advice or opinions.
I'm wondering how long you have had these high PTH numbers. Several years or just recently?

I would highly recommend that you to get a referral to an endocrinologist. This is the type of specialist who can help sort out these issues. Are you currently seeing an endocrinologist?

My wife's pth was 213, 191. She had 3 glands removed that were bad, her surgeon here in Milwaukee was only going to take out the 1 bad one they could see and not check all 4. We went to Tampa Florida to the Norman center and they checked all 4 and removed 3 bad ones. easy surgery, 6 hrs in hospital and then back in the hotel room. Her pth dropped like a rock and now is normal. We had a great time in Tampa! These people are top notch surgeons. Don't wait any longer.

These scans they do aren’t very accurate because they told my wife she only had 1 tumor but she ended up having 3 tumors. That’s why the surgeon needs to check all 4 glands during surgery to be cured.
