Effects of interruption of radiation therapy ?
Does anyone have information on the effects of interruption of radiation therapy ?
E.g., for a few days/a week/..
I am planning to start treatment soon, but also expect to travel for a few days after the beginning. I was wondering if there was any information on the effect of interruptions in the treatment.

Your results may vary.
Some people have urinary problems and rectal problems, Some people don’t. A very small minority Have bladder problems.
Your PSA may not go down immediately after radiation. The cells die off when they try to split to make more. Some people can take a few months watching their PSA go down and maybe up a little and back down. Some people wait a year or two or even more before it hits bottom. That’s not too normal For it to take that long..
The shots are probably ADT, which will make your desire to have sex almost disappear. You should be able to still get an erection for a while, Maybe a few years even, But with the shot that becomes a little more difficult Since you have a little desire.
The shots will also caused you to have hot flashes, will weaken your muscles Considerably and will cause your bones to weaken, Make sure to have a DEXA scan before you wait too long to find out your bone strength/condition now.
Not knowing anything about your diagnosis, makes it difficult to say much more.
Did you get a decipher test to find out what your chance of reoccurrence is?
Hello
I myself went through radiation therapy for my prostate cancer
Went through many weeks of therapy....I have been getting shots as well I have 1 more to get. Anyone knows what happens after treatment for radiation therapy for prostate cancer?
Mark
I’m sure there’s some weird study somewhere about the effects of starting and stopping radiation treatment, I’m not aware of one. I do know that fractions are cumulative and the way it kills cancer cells is the slow build up of radiation that damages cell DNA. Stopping in the middle would allow cells to recover faster and minimize the effects of treatment. I would guess it might be okay to take a break from treatment for a couple of days, but why risk it?
The wiser course would be to complete the treatment plan as scheduled to maximize the benefits of radiation to the target area.
I’m not a Radiologist so I don’t know these things myself but definitely something you should talk with your care team about.

1 ReactionWhy don't you just ask your RO to postpone the start of treatment until after you return from your trip?

1 Reactionsolmank: This is a question that is best asked of your radiation treatment providers. There are normal intervals without radiation such as weekends without radiation while undergoing 30+ proton radiation treatments. However, too long an interval may be detrimental. Talk to your providers

1 ReactionOne year ago I did 39 sessions of IMRT. The second week the machine broke down for 2 days in conjunction with the Memorial day weekend.
So 5 days missed. There was no indication that it had any negative results.
Good luck

1 ReactionWe were in the planning stage for fiducials, SpaceOAR, and then radiation treatments. I had a three week trip coming up in a few weeks, so the RO decided to delay everything until I returned. I’m not sure if this was for a medical reason or convenience.
