Dry Mouth

Any of you experiencing dry mouth from nebulizing all the sodium chloride solution? If so , have you developed any gum or tooth problems from it?

I occasionally wake up with dry mouth which I believe is caused by mouth breathing-which I try to avoid at all times. I also occasionally get a dry mouth when nebulizing but that's usually due to me not drinking enough water. Maybe drinking more water and tea would help? If I don't need to produce a sputum sample for NJH (they advise no liquids 1 hour before nebulizing/sputum production), I sip on water of Mullein tea when I nebulize.

Yes, I am having dry mouth and tongue problems for over a year. I know a few of my meds can have a side effect of dry mouth but cannot go off them. I recently switched from 3% Nacl to 0.9% about 2 months ago. I have tried all the over the counter products for dry mouth but nothing changes. I have brought it up to my dentist and she agrees it feels really dry. Long term I know it can cause dental problems. I see my dentist again in 2 weeks and plan to address the risk of dry mouth and see if she has any solutions. I’m about ready to stop nebulizing.

@patti55 sometimes it seems you can’t win.

No kidding! I’ve already had gum surgery due to gums suddenly pulling away and the only thing I changed was I started nebulizing so it makes me think the daily exposure to NaCl was drying them out and pulling them away. I do NOT want to go through that again. But my mouth remains very dry. Does anyone know how critical it is to Nebulize or would just using the Aerobika and continue with airway clearance sufficient? Thank you for any advice.

Have you tried any of the OTC products for dry mouth? I haven’t personally used them, but a woman in my old book club had Sjogren’s (autoimmune causing dry mouth, eyes, etc) and used one.
I do have a dry mouth, but it’s more likely due to large dose antihistamines for another issue. I sip most of day, chew sugar free gum, etc. I know it’s frowned upon, but I sip hot water (in winter) while I neb.

I really am a believer in benefits of the hypertonic saline. I know it’s just anecdotal and may be coincidence, but it sure seems to keep me from picking up all my grands’ bugs, which was big issue before I started it.

@cholash, why do you think the dry mouth is from nebulizing?

Hi@pacathy, I agree with your last paragraph and your statement about taking antihistamines for other reasons causing a dry mouth. But the nebulizing routine is a big factor for me in keeping the bugs away. Since 2023, I have not had a cold or flu since I began to nebulize Albuterol and then Hypertonic Saline 3% plus Aerobika.
Nebulizing did not prevent Covid and an allergic to reaction to dust and possible mold but I'm going to check with my primary for some tips concerning the dry mouth and also follow your tip about sipping warm water.
Thanks,

Try biotene at the drug store. It’s in the dental section. It works great for dry mouth.

@tcd518 I discussed with my dentist , as the dry mouth didn’t start until after I had started daily nebs.

@westcottkm3040 I’ve been using it . My dentist said there is nothing to get rid of dry mouth ( aka xerostomia), but it will help the symptoms . I’m just concerned of long term effects on my gums & teeth.
