Drugs or exercise and vitamins?

Posted by cmiller59 @cmiller59, May 10, 2023

I recently went to a rheumatologist to get some questions answered regarding my osteoporosis. He said I had Senile osteoporosis and that he felt I definitely should take Alendronate Sodium once a week. I have also heard such horrific stories about osteo meds and am terrified to take them but also terrified not to of I need them. I am taking calcium and Vitamin D and exercise almost daily since the diagnosis. Is this enough to stop it from getting worse or should I start the meds. I want to hold off until my next scan but that isn’t until Oct. 24. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thank you.

There is so much conflicting info abouot HRT. I had a REMS scan yesterday (very helpful) and the doc who did it said that low dose bio-identical HRT can be safely started well after menopause and shown to be helpful. Recommended finding a doctor of integrative medicine to help explor e this option.
Does anyone have experience with a late start on HRT of the bio-ID kind?

Yes. I started last year at 76. Bhrt, estradiol and testosterone pellet, vaginal estradiol and progesterone capsules.

My gynecologist felt that it was "ok" for me to embark on a 'late start' with HRT. So I tried what he considered "a low dose" ----I swelled up like a balloon (especially notable in my face), became quite moody & overall, simply felt sick--------BUT, that was my experience----- Low-dose HRT helps some of us 'older' women. ( I'm disappointed I can't be one of them.)

What form of hrt and what was the dose, if I may ask? How did your physician explain your reaction?

I my case she started me on .025 estradiol patch, 100 mg progesterone and estradiol vaginal cream. Also a very low dose testosterone cream.

@gravity3 -- It was a tiny pill. My doc said it was most likely
progesterone sensitivity. But ultimately, he was unsure.
