Drains removed?

Posted by dmjude @dmjude, Mar 7 11:12am

I had a double mastectomy on February 27 My drains were removed yesterday woke up this morning with swelling and leakage. I went to surgical nurse that removed the drains yesterday This morning she told me that she had never seen the drains pull out the way My drains did she drew me a picture and explained They were wrapped circular, and when they were removed, the drain pulled along the chest wall in a downward scooping this now is making my body try to heal the new damage that was done to my skin . I may have to go in and have an ultrasound and fluid removed with needles. I was told to rest today don’t lift my arms and call them tomorrow if the swelling increases. . Anybody had this problem?

Just wanted to check in and see how you are doing. Personally I haven't had drains, but from what I know from friends who have, this does indeed sound very unusual. Has the situation improved at all? How are you feeling?

@dmjude Hope you are doing better. If the drains weren’t draining properly, this may be the result. I had two drains for at least 2 weeks. We kept track of the amount of drainage each day. The removal was based on this. Blessings.

Just got back from surgeons office decided to put a drain in on the right side . It was done in the office with an ultrasound they remove 40 mL. I did not do anything for the left side because the fluid is absorb back into the body they think the right side swelled because this is the arm I use the most might be the reason that the fluid filled up again on the right side after the removal of the first drain. I think they took it out too soon.

I had the drains removed after seven days and 25 mL output for two days straight. I am at the Mayo clinic by myself so they think maybe I overused my right arm and that caused the fluid buildup. I just had a drain put in on the right side in the doctors office today. 40 mg of fluid came out using a drain I won’t have to keep going back if we use a needle to remove fluid there’s no guarantee. It a pain to start over with a drain but being out of town I did not want more complications.
