Does the used Tymlos or Forteo pen go in the sharps container ?

I am still trying to find out what to do with my used Tymlos pen. I drove it to Walgreens this morning and was told they don’t take it despite what their website said. Yes I tried to call first but got no answer. Walgreens gave me a number o call, but it was for the DEA (!)
Chat GPT indicates I should put it in the sharps container. Great! Is this true? Is this what you all are doing ? This would be easy, as I already have a mail back program for the

I tossed all my Forteo pens in regular trash bin. The pens are made of pretty rigid plastics, including the see-through barrels. They dont appear to be easily breakable. The pen needles go in the sharps container.

The leftover contents in the pen are small peptides prone to degradation, which most likely are not considered biohazadous in my opinion.

I only put the needle in the sharps container. I have been discarding my pens in the regular trash but may start taking them to my county's medicine disposal site. An online search revealed that my town's police department has a medicine disposal program.

I too was putting mine in the trash. But after this thread started I asked a CVS pharmacist about it and she said it was OK to put the pen in the sharps container. Now I'm more confused than before 😐

I also asked the pharmacist and they said to dispose of the pen in the sharps container. Also have asked about what to do with the sharps container when full. I asked both pharmacy and local landfill on correct procedure for my area to dispose of the sharps container with pens. I was told to use packing tape to secure the container and sharpie to mark the outside with the words "do not recycle" then dispose of in the regular trash. So that's what I've done since starting. I can get about 6 months of pens and needles in a 1 quart container.

I suggest you call your local waste disposal agency and also your local pharmacy for what is appropriate for your principality and state.

I disposed my tymlos pens into the medication bin at the pharmacy for tossing prescription medications. Just like you do with expired prescription pills.

Hi. I brought them to my Drs office and they said they dont take them that all these medication pens should go in the recycle bin. So that's what I am doing.

Thank you. Good idea to check with local and state regulation regarding disposal. I did this morning, but didn’t get a clear answer regarding the definition of sharps from my state/local website. Needles, syringes were listed. The example for injectable pens was auto-injector which has a retractable needle. Forteo pen doesn’t have built-in needles and we take pen needles off to dispose in sharps container. I guess in the future I’ll dispose used pens in sharps containers just to be safe…

We could dispose a securely sealed sharps container (a non see-through laundry detergent bottle is okay too) in regular household trash where I live.

Walgreens didn’t have one.

@daisylou
Others do; Albertsons, CVS and local health departments.

The pharmacist handed me a sharps container the first time I picked up my Forteo. I hadn't asked for one and wouldn't have thought of it.
