Does Diet Help Control Collagenous Colitis?
Hi! I just finished an 8 week course of budesonide for a recent collagenous colitis diagnosis. My GI Dr. insists that diet has no affect on it. I find this confusing, based on what I've read on various sites. I am currently avoiding gluten, full fat dairy, nuts, seeds, caffeine, alcohol and most raw fruits and raw vegetables. Is he correct? I'd love a salad and a glass of wine!

@lisalucier - thanks for including me on this one.
I was diagnosed in October 2023 (along with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and Essential Thrombocytosis so it's been an interesting journey).
I remain on 3 mg Budesonide daily and expect to remain on it indefinitely. Diet has been a challenge but generally I find that I cannot eat raw vegetables (and I was a salad lover) with the exception of soft lettuces and I keep that to a minimum. No dried beans like kidney, pinto, garbanzo, etc. Even when I soak them for 24 hours before cooking, they give me trouble. Tomato sauce is also a trigger. I do indulge in one glass of wine with dinner on the weekend and that seems to be okay. My go-tos are chicken (no skin or visible fat); fish including shellfish; potatoes (although I need to watch this as I tend towards high potassium levels); green beans; well-cooked broccoli, cabbage, carrots, asparagus and other similar vegetables. I also eat lean beef and pork occasionally with no obvious problems. I eat well-cooked oatmeal for breakfast. Eggs are a life saver and I eat them several times a week. I minimize gluten-containing foods and dairy. I do drink decaf coffee once a day in the morning. Unfortunately, even with all this my collagenous colitis is not well-controlled although it is manageable with Immodium. I have an appointment with my GI at the end of this month to discuss what else we might do.
