Does anyone treat their neuropathy without pharmaceutical drugs?

Posted by annashby @annashby, Feb 1 3:56pm

I’ve recently been diagnosed with neuropathy and given gabapentin for pain. I am concerned about the many side effects of this drug. I don’t know why I have this condition as I am not diabetic and have no pinched nerves in my spine. I’m 78 and pretty healthy except for this. I exercise at the gym 4-4 times a week and walk several miles when I don’t go to the Y.
Anyone have suggestions for me?

@mademoiselle I tried capsaicin 6 times and each time I used it it made my feel burn worse than the actual neuropathy. My feet and legs where I put the capsaicin burned so bad I thought I was burning a live. It took like 4-5 hours before the burning of the capsaicin wore off. I had to stop taking it because it burned so bad. Maybe it won't make it feel like it is burning you like it did me.

@hughpuppies
I had the same experience with capsaicin cream.

@hughpuppies I can’t imagine how people stand the burning!

It sounds like you are in good health and doing well in the exercise department. Diet can play a role in the world of neuropathy as well as environmental conditions. I find heightened sensitivity due to my neuropathy but no need to take prescription medications. We need to be patient with and understanding of our bodies. Our minds have alot to do with this. Also, I recommend sleep to refresh the body and mind.

Well consider yourself lucky. Peripheral neuropathy can cause real pain and other symptoms that keep people from sleeping well. So if you are doing so well without meds and getting plenty of sleep…r u sure you have neuropathy…? I appreciate your upbeat comments and suggestions but consider yourself lucky.

@arcuri24 I was doing fair with foot neuropathy, then a pain doc did a pareneal injection behind my knee. It was supposed to help… he hit the nerve. I never thought a foot could hurt so bad. Leg was totally numb for 3 days, but when it came back, my foot was on fire. It still burns bad. If I eat bacon or ham it is like a blow torch on the bottom of my foot. Only thing I can do is rub lidocaine on it and wear a light sock- even to bed. What a blunder, then he wouldn’t answer a text for two weeks.

I cured my neuropathy with magnesium capsules and tart Cherry juice. . I know of 2 ladies with spinal stenosis who use the combination to control severe cramping and leg pain.j if you take some of the Gastric meds it interferes with your magnesium absorption one of the culprits is Zantac . Hope it works for you

@spower112000liverpoo can you share how much you took of each? Thank you

To those with PN in the feet. I wear compression knee high hose 20-30 mmHG. Helps with circulation. The numbness, balance and dizziness have caused some falls. I walk with a cane and it helps greatly. I too go to the gym 4X a week. Have to use what you have if you want to keep it.

I had neuropathy in jaw and upper rt teeth and gums. Took cabamazepine for pain a few fays,then tried turmeric and cayenne pepper. And plenty of B12 to rebuild lost nerve insulating myelin. Worked great. What ever you take, be sure to take B12 as well, because few of us eat enough animal protein, it's the only source. Good luck.
James.
