Does anyone have side effects from Gliclazide?

I’ve just started Glimepiride, which is in the same family as Gliclazide (and Glipizide). I haven’t noticed any issue with libido. But it is a different drug— just the same effect of increased insulin production. Of course, the whole diabetes situation has been a downer in general. So, maybe I had little to lose! 😉

I was put on glimepiride 1 mg after putting me on hydrocortisone until my right adrenal kicks in. Already on 2000 mg of metformin and 100 mg januvia. Only side effect I've had is from the hydrocortisone

@cehunt57 In answer to your question... My answer is no. I do mean Gliclazide! It made me loose my libido within weeks of starting it. Now I have ED to boot. I can't even get turned on anymore. I need to speak to a new endocrinologist to get on a drug that's just as effective without such side effects. I want to be a man again... Know what I mean?
I am curious if anyone else has had this side effect from Gliclazide?

As mentioned above you might want to speak with your doctor about some of the newer sulfonylurea drugs which will have the same positive effect on diabetes as Gliclazide. Never heard of ED as being a side effect of these. Gliclazide is not sold in the USA so very few on this board will have any experience with it.

@jim18 I happen to be living in Canada. My blood sugar was very high 4 or 5 years ago (25.) My endocrinologist put me on 2000 mg. of Metformin at first. That only brought my blood sugar down to 16. He was not happy with that level. He then introduced me to Gliclazide and within 3 or 4 weeks I lost my libido. I just couldn't perform. I couldn't get aroused any more. He was pleasantly surprised that my blood sugar levels came close to normal. I was dumbfounded! Years later, I am trying to convince my GP, to refer me to an experienced endocrinologist. I want to be a true man again. I understand why this drug is not promoted in the US.

@jim18 Thank-you Jim! When I do see a new edocrinologist, I will encourage them to put me on a new & trusted sulfonylurea drugs and wean me off of the Gliclazide. I need an experienced diabetes doctor who understands the options out there for me. That Gliclazide is simply too potent a medication for me. In fact, I can often cheat on my sugar intake by having a regular soda or a sweet desert and end up with close to normal blood sugar readings in the long run. I watch my blood sugar levels quite closely.

Rough conversion 5mg glipizide or 2mg glimepiride has the same effect on blood glucose as 60mg MR gliclazide. Besides those 2 discuss DPP4 and SGLT drugs with your doctor. DPP4 extend natural GLP1 life and have about half the effect of the GLP1 jabs (Ozempic, Mounjaro). SGLTs reduce glucose recapture by the kidneys allowing sugar to be removed in urine. All are available in Canada and except the jabs (expensive in USA) are low-cost generic pills.
