Does anyone have hyponatremia?
I was diagnosed with very low electrolytes and was in hospital for three days getting sodium in a IV. It worked and I came home within a few months my sodium was low at 125.

Can u give us some more information. Are you otherwise healthy? May we ask your age? Have you ever been diagnosed with an eating disorder, do u drink water excessively, have an unusual desire for large amounts of water? Are you an endurance athlete? Do u take diuretics (water pills)? Some medications can cause low sodium, especially seizure medication and cancer meds. Non medical drugs like ecstasy (MDMA). Internal organ dysfunction such as heart failure (though heart failure is usually severe by the time sodium drops), liver disease, especially cirrhosis. Hormonal imbalances, most famously addisons disease. Even advanced hypothyroid disease can cause low sodium. There is a syndrome called SIADH which is an entire story unto itself so I will skip the deets here. Chronic body fluids being lost by vomiting, diarrhea, major burns but you should have multiple electrolyte issues with this. Extremely uncontrolled diabetics have very high blood sugar which causes fluid shifts in the body,, I will end with excessive beer consumption called beer poromania. There are also less common causes.
First tho, tell us about yourself
I'm 83. I have been dealing with low electroyletes (low sodium) for 5 years. I have no serious illness except Osteoporosis Arthritis and low thyroid. I have been seeing a Nephrologist for about a yr and so far nothing is working. I was in hospital in 2024 for a sodium level 125. They gave me saline in a IV and brought it up to 133. Now it's back to 127. I'm taking UREA tabs.

1 Reaction@maggie76 I've just turned 80 and my health has been turned upside down in a 3 month period. Just to focus on the Hyponatermia--I had never had any kidney problems until I had an emergency heart cath in late August of this year. Three days later I was admitted to ICU for congestive heart failure, blood clots in my lungs and hyponatermia. I was prescribed UREA and initially took the powder but have since ordered the caplets. I actually have to grind the pills up to make powder as they are too large to swallow. Do you order from amazon or the company? The company I use is a little cheaper than Amazon. Did your insurance pay for the UREA? I've paid out of pocket so far and it's not cheap. I had my doctor sign that it is medically necessary that I take it and I'll send statement and invoices to the insurance co. to see if they will respond favorably. I see my nephrologist tomorrow. My chemistry results from test on Wednesday are in normal range. However there is a test eGFR CKD-EPI is 53 and reference range should be greater thank 91. Also a test eCrCl shows results "NA." It should be 30-120. I look forward to hearing from you.

1 ReactionHi, thanks for writing back. I feel that when I turned 80 I had 1 problem after another. As for UREA I bought them on Amazon in pill form for $66. I didn't try asking my Ins co yet to reimburse me, maybe I will down the road. Last time I had blood work my sodium level was 127
I see the Nephologist in Jan. Are you taking the UREA for low sodium? I don't know what else to tell you so will end off here.

1 ReactionHas your sodium gone up since you have been taking the Tabs and or powder?
@maggie76 The lowest my sodium was when I was in ICU was 128. This week it is 137. My eGFR CKD-EPI currently is 53 mL/min.

1 ReactionDo you take water pills. I was on a water pill for a few days and it lowered my sodium.
It is one of the side effects
and for that reason I'm not taking it.

1 ReactionHello again, your sodium level has gone up to 137. That is great news so these UREA pills are working. Do you eat high protein meals. The Nephologist has me eating protein. Is there anything else you are doing differently than you did before when your sodium level was low?

1 Reaction@maggie76 - I saw my Nephologist yesterday for follow up--UREA reduced from 15 grams twice a day to 15 grams once a day 3 weeks ago. My labs were "great" so he feels the UREA is doing it's job. He said to keep taking it once a day and he will see me in 6 weeks and get blood work at that time. I try to make sure I have some protein with each meal or snack. I also put protein powder in my coffee every day.
