Does anyone find relief for arthritis in knees with Gabapentin?

Posted by molly7234 @molly7234, Jul 22, 2023

I’m 78 years old. First case of Covid in May 2023. It was accompanied by pneumonia and strep throat and I tested positive for 18 days in July while walking my dog I pulled a muscle in my left calf going up a slight incline, just radiated into my left knee with some swelling and nerve pain, I’ve been prescribed gabapentin for restless leg and take 300 mg at night. I have a prescription for 100 mg which I started with. I’ve never had arthritis like this and now it’s in the other knee as well. My thigh muscles are extremely weak and I know I need to exercise to strengthen them. Advice please

I’ve been taking 600 mg 4x a day for at least 10 yrs for my back pain but I really don’t know if it works because I have chronic back pain . I need rods and have severe stenosis but I also take 50 mg Tramadol 4x day plus Tylenol plus one tablet of a Antiflamtory pill a day

Sorry I missed your comment and yes I have posted that I had very good success with prolotherapy and with PRP. It is all about ligaments that are overstretched and do not do their stability job. I still have hypermobile joints ... the SI Joint was my original joint issues that took 6 doctors to find the prolotherapy answer. When the illiopsoas ligament responded and tightened up again the SI Joint stop causing my leg to sublux! I still must pull the knee to the chest on occasion to reset the SI Joint as it still moves a bit too far sometimes.
I had PRP to remove scar tissue from my groin scar from the hip operation by the doctor who ignored the info I gave him and did not sew up the incision the special way connective tissue disorder requires. PRP did the job will without more surgery.

What are PRP and prolotherapy?

Here is something from National Spine and Pain Centers ...;.
Prolotherapy is an innovative technique that relieves pain by directly impacting the underlying condition causing that pain. In contrast to many medical treatments that may provide only temporary benefits, this safe, proven treatment offers lasting relief. Many conditions respond well to prolotherapy, such as facet syndrome (back and neck arthritis), whiplash, joint sprains, degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow, sprains, chronic tendonitis, and more.
Prolotherapy promotes long-term, often permanent pain relief by stimulating the body’s ability to repair itself. A solution of concentrated dextrose and local anesthetic (steroids are not used) is injected into the affected ligaments, tendons, or joint capsules. This solution acts not as a nutrient, but by stimulating the body’s natural ability to repair these tissues, encouraging growth of new ligament or tendon fibers.
Multiple treatments encourage additional tissue growth to restore and strengthen the affected area. An individual plan is devised with prolotherapy treatments scheduled every two to six weeks until the healing is complete, and you can return to normal activities without pain.

My fix took only 1 tgreatment ... ???

and PRP ... Regenexx® Platelet Rich Plasma Treatment
Platelet therapy, or platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, is a revolutionary new treatment that relieves pain by promoting long lasting healing of musculoskeletal conditions using the healing power of your own body. This rapidly emerging technique is showing exciting success with osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip and spine, rotator cuff tears, chronic plantar fascitis, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, pelvic pain and instability, back and neck injuries, tennis elbow, ankle sprains, tendonitis, and ligament sprains.

I am curious as well how this happened. I have taken 600mg every night for several years for my arthritis as I can't take other things for it.

Curcumin itself is not absorbed in the bloodstream. In recent years black pepper extract was added to curcumin supplements making it 2000% more absorbable. Still it is metabolized quickly and stays effective for 3-4 hours. Many people take it multiple times a day for continued effect. No upper limit on how much you can take.
It should be known that it is a blood thinner. Talk to your doctor.

Gabapentin was a problem for me after spinal fusion. I did not like the way it made me feel... or think. Same with other members of my family. Good luck.

I went up to 600 mg of gabapentin three times a day! Didn’t seem to help with the pain. Now they switched me to Lyrica. At first 150 2 times a day but I was very shaky so then we went to 100 MG‘s Three times a day now I am reduced to 100 mg of Lyrica two times a day. I am stopped taking Celebrex and Tylenol because of how thin my skin is and how easily I bruise and bleed. But I think is helping me to Keep walking is the Myofascial release treatments and volunteering at our Humane Society. If you love animals, it gives you something to look forward to every day.

At first I really never thought to gabapentinian would work but as time went on it did help you know with a certain the right pain medication with gabapentin and it works like a substitute like something to help it kick it in and it does help

If you're 78 and your knees were fine until you got Covid, I'm suspicious that it's arthritis. I'm 66 and have had osteoarthritis for 30 years. It's almost always a slowly progressing disease. When I was first diagnosed, I had no symptoms and they've gradually manifested and worsened over the years.

I'd ask your doc if it's tendinitis or another temporary condition resulting from Covid.

As far as gabapentin goes, I've never taken it and, even though I've got severe arthritis in most joints now, never been prescribed anything other than NSAIDs for inflammation/pain relief.

Try to make the effort to get mild exercise to strengthen your thighs and the muscles around your knees. Always look at drugs as a last resort. Almost all have undesirable side effects. Hope this helps!

A caution that high doses of curcumin/turmeric supplements are linked to liver injury especially when combined with black pepper to enhance bioavailability:
