Does anyone else have issues with piriformis

Posted by craigslefknee @craigslefknee, Sep 18 6:00pm

I have been having piriformis muscle pain for at least two years. It presses against the siatic nerve causing electrical shock type pain to my foot. Seems to have gotten worse since TKR 9 weeks ago. It aches when walking for extended periods and the real bad pair comes when lying and turning from one side to the other. I have had epidural injections which help some but don't cure the issue. Any advice would be appreciated. Have done PT for it but nothing seems to really help.

I have had great help with acupuncture along with pt. Strengthening back and stomach muscles seems to help me also. Hope you can find something that works for you soon.

@craigsleftknee: I am sorry pain in your piriformis muscles is such a limitation. I have found this pain relief by doing yoga stretches for the hips. The sciatica pain running down your leg from hip is awful too. My sympathies are with you!

I had a great massage therapist who worked on the piriformis muscles at each appointment.

I am having the same problem following THR 2 months ago. I do have a bad back also, so I don't know if it will ever get better. I sure hope so. It is interfering with my recovery from hip replacement surgery.

Sorry to hear about your issues like I have. I too have back/hip problems. Epidural helps back, but recovery from TKR has been hampered by piriformis

I tried massage but either my therapist is not working it correctly or it doesn't respond to massage. Thanks for your suggestion

My PT therapist massages each time I go, usually 2 times a week, and it is just as bad, if not worse, by the time I go back. Extremely painful even when she is messaging. We both think the main problems are arising from my back, along with the change in gait after my hip surgery. Seems it's always something!

How was it determined that you had piriformis syndrome? I am currently having severe pain in my hip and buttock. I have PT, deep muscular massage, and still I am not feeling any better.
