Do I Want to Doctor with Provider who isn’t supportive of my needs

Posted by retirement75 @retirement75, Nov 16, 2023

I alternate between cardiologist and P.A. Every 6 months. On occasion I have asked to see someone outside of this schedule when I needed a concern addressed, which happened a couple weeks ago. I had some tachycardia and needed to know how to deal with it. The P.A mentioned that she remembered I was self-aware. How can you not be self-ware when your heart is beating over 100 beats a minute. I had also inquired about doing an echocardiogram early as my fatigue has been really bad, heart failure. Today a nurse talked with me and labeled me as hypervigilent and noted I’ve called them before (?). I have severe coronary artery disease and just want to doctor with people who are open to hearing my concerns. Where do I find this?

"Do I Want to Doctor with Provider who isn’t supportive of my needs?"

No.

I'm trying to find a new doctor myself, without much luck so far.

I look at it this way -- I'm recovering from a stroke. I'm in the fight of my life. I only want people in my life who are on my side. That includes doctors.

You get it. I may have to back to Mayo Clinic. I felt supported there. Thanks for your input!

retirement75, I am so sorry you have heart issues and a hard to get up with doctor and PA. I find that "mychart" may be great for some, but, calling the office and leaving messages works better. I have some wonderful doctors NOW, but, I had to go through a few to find some after several that wouldn't listen or couldn't think outside the box to someone that is super sensitive to medication. Time consuming....YES....but worth it! To be honest, my doctors of 25 years or more have retired and one passed away. They were old school and it's been hard to find anyone like them....but, I finally did. If a doctor is arrogant, in too big of a hurry, doesn't listen, or treats me like a number....I don't go back. I am not a hard person to get along with and am a good patient. Our medical system is broken since COVID, retirements and shortages & insurance restrictions. Doctors & nurses are overworked and exhausted. With that said, again, there are still wonderful doctors out there. It is hard to start over with a new doctor after 25+ years with one, but, it is going to happen to all of us sooner or later. Please keep trying. You may need to find another Cardiologist. You will hit gold one day with one! God Bless You!

I'm sorry you having this struggle..
It sometimes difficult for some providers to partner with a individual who is paying attention and self advocates.
I always send emails so they is a trail to our conversation. I would have a conversation about their attitude and concerns they have... and if it persists course consider a change . You're are able to do that. It's important to feel supported

I’ve been reflecting on your post. Yes, I think providers prefer patients who don’t question a lot and go quietly through the process of doctoring. I’ve realized I need to be acknowledged as a relevant part of treatment.

I'm glad you feel confident in that focus. It is hard for providers, Especially over the last years. I also don't think there is a lot of training on how to empower patients in the process, as well as how to take care of themselves . Compassion fatigue can happen quickly to those serving others everyday. I am praying that you can be confident in your part of your care.

I think you are right. They really don’t have time to address all of your concerns in a 15-20 minute office visit.
