Do I have brain eating amoeba?

Posted by crawfordjake475 @crawfordjake475, Jul 3 2:44pm

I’m writing with a health concern I hope you can help clarify. Yesterday, I was eating celery that had recently been washed using kitchen sink water in Arizona. While eating a piece, a celery leaf accidentally went up my nose.

Today — the following day — I began feeling nauseous, developed a headache, and have been feeling shaky. I’m concerned about whether this could be related to the celery or the water used to wash it, and whether there’s any risk of infection or something more serious.

Could you please advise on whether this incident poses any medical risk, and whether I should seek in-person care?

Thank you for your time and guidance.

@crawfordjake475 Well, I think you can set your mind at ease that anything you were feeling immediately after inhaling the leaf was NOT the result of any parasite.
Why?
First, the cilia in your nose are quite effective at pushing unwanted matter back out.
Next because it's unlikely there were live amoeba hanging out in chlorinated water.
Finally because it would take quite some time for any amoeba to travel to your brain and multiply to cause symptoms- think weeks or months.

If the celery leaf is still in your nose, you could use a saline rinse and gentle blowing to get it out.
How are you feeling today?

Any nasal irritation or drainage from the celery leaf? Did it come out?
